Wayfarers Chapel: An Iconic Glass Chapel in Palos Verdes
Wayfarers Chapel is an iconic church and wedding venue in Rancho Palos Verdes on the Southern California Coast. The chapel. Originally imagined as a place where “wayfarers” could stop on their travels to take a rest, the chapel was completed in 1951 (Wayfarers).
I spent my childhood in the South Bay and Wayfarers Chapel has always been a beautiful institution, standing on cliffs high above the Pacific Ocean. For generations, this venue has been a favorite place for so many people to get married, and I have been blessed to photograph many weddings at this beautiful chapel. A Wayfarers Chapel wedding is always a magical experience.
Wayfarers Chapel Landslide and Closure in 2024
Palos Verdes is a beautiful city featuring cliffs facing the pacific ocean to the west. It has some of the most beautiful views in the United States, but it is also the location of an ancient landslide. That landslide was dormant for many years but “It was reactivated in 1956 by Los Angeles County’s extension of Crenshaw Boulevard and has been moving ever since, becoming one of the largest continuously active landslides in the U.S. and moving homes by hundreds of feet over the years” (Rancho Palos Verdes).
On February 15th, 2024, Wayfarer’s Chapel announced that they were closed indefinitely because of increased land movement in Palos Verdes. They stated on their website, “For those who have confirmed reservations at Wayfarers Chapel, please know refunds will be issued, and our Weddings and Events Office will be in contact with you soon.”

I have spent a lot of time photographing Wayfarer’s Chapel weddings with some of my favorite brides and grooms, and I am hoping that this gorgeous venue can be saved.
Some of My Favorite Memories of Wayfarers Chapel Weddings
Samanta and James’s Wayfarers Chapel wedding was one that I photographed without a second shooter, and I am incredibly proud of how that wedding went. I love that I was able to get all of these gorgeous shots and that the day went so well. What made the day even better is that through the process of working up to their wedding and through it, I became friends with Samanta and I still see her, which adds joy to my life.
Another bride that I love had a Wayfarer’s Chapel wedding. At their wedding, the groom watched his daughter walk down the aisle as the flower girl and then picked her up and kissed her when she got to the end of the aisle. The sun was shining through their hair, and the beautiful glass chapel highlighted a wonderful moment.
My favorite thing about a Wayfarers Chapel wedding is the view. On one side you see an incredibly vast Pacific Ocean while on the other side, you see the peninsula swirling out beyond you. You always get little bursts of ocean air that feel so magical on your skin and give you that feeling of being somewhere magical.
