Now with just 4 months until we say “I do”, I can’t wait to spend this intimate day with our closest friends and family who’ve stuck by and supported both Mike and I for the 8.5 years we’ve been together. The funny thing is, from all the years I’ve been with him, I’ve never seen mike shed a tear. When people ask what I’m most excited about, I simply reply, “to see Mike cry” 🙂

FROM THE BRIDE // Quan and I first met 5800 miles away from home in South Korea. We were both there for a summer study abroad program that lasted 8 weeks. Funny enough, it wasn’t until the last week of the program when we finally started hanging out. That was 6 years ago and we’ve been inseparable since.

One day, Quan sent me an email at work and told me to solve the riddle within. I didn’t think anything of it as he is really into mind games. After failing to resolve the riddle, I gave up without much thought. Fast forward to a week later and Quan wanted to cook us dinner after work. I got off of work two hours earlier than anticipated and he was just getting home with a bags of groceries as I was pulling up the driveway. He whipped up dinner and after a great meal, he pulled the box out of his pocket and asked me to marry him. I’ve never him so shy and nervous in our entire relationship! I said “YES, of course!” and here we are today. It wasn’t until a few weeks later when he confessed that the riddle was his first attempt!

      Palos Verdes Hipster Engagement 0019

Vic and I basically come from opposite sides of the world; I’m from Southern California and Vic is kind of from everywhere (Guam, Thailand, Singapore, Boston, you name it….), so we think it was probably fate when we happened to meet by chance about 3 years ago when I was living in Boston finishing up graduate school and Vic was living in San Francisco working in tech. Traveling started out of necessity for us trying to maintain a long distance relationship from opposite coasts of the country. Every month we would look up cheap flights in random cities and decide to meet up in places like Portland, Dallas, and Austin to keep things interesting. We crave adventure and spontaneity, so traveling naturally became a vital part of our relationship and took us to places like Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, Laos and the Philippines. On April second of last year, Vic basically tricked me into marrying him when he proposed on the beach in Tulum! He made me think I lost one of my favorite rings (an older ring he got me at the beginning of our relationship)…after I was digging in the sand for a few minutes and on the verge of tears, Vic pretended like he “found” said ring and continued by putting a diamond ring on my finger. Being that it was shortly after April Fools, I seriously thought it was some kind of joke and said no (about 3 times). To this day we are not even sure if I said yes in that moment, but we really like each other so decided to stay engaged! HA. We are beyond excited to bring together our friends and family from all over the world in order to celebrate our marriage in the awesome little town of Whittier, California. It will be a Thai-Armenian celebration for the books!

Night Portraits, Receptions and Low Lit weddings

Recently I’ve had quite a few inquiries where brides have asked me about our photography skills in dark situations, night portraits, receptions, and low lit weddings. As a photographer who has been shooting weddings for many years, I am very quick to say, “Of course, I’ve been doing that for years. It’s so easy!” But I do realize that much of our night portraiture, reception lighting, or low light situations are shrouded with artificial lighting, to make our images look light and bright, to be in sync with our branded style. It’s important for every bride and groom to know that all photography is about capturing light. Cameras are built to capture light in either pixels or grain. In low lighting situations grain is inevitable, but often can be absolutely beautiful.

For our Sun & Sparrow wedding team, we have decided that we want every image to have a very clear consistency. This includes all of our details, portraits (day and night) as well as our reception images. One of the most difficult things about being a consistent photographer, is to make every type of lighting situation feel the same.

For example, TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEXT THREE IMAGES, THEN READ ON…

… All of these images were taken in very low lighting situations. The best part about these three images is that we have used three different artificial lighting techniques to achieve our signature Sun & Sparrow photography style.  All of these images were from different weddings and were taken at different times of the day by different photographers. I love that there is a great consistency in the style of shot, the style of lighting, and the style of editing.

You might also want to know how and if we are open to  “Night Portraits.” We absolutely are. Sometimes night time portraits are necessary because we have run out of light. Other times, we have a specific request for night portraits because of a beautifully lit environment or because a couple really wants to use sparklers. We love to use our external or artificial lighting to make epic images.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEXT THREE IMAGES AND THEN READ ON…

Lastly, I want to address how we light our receptions. It’s very important to Sun & Sparrow to not only capture your wedding in the most pure form possible, but to also capture your connection and love in motion. All of this is really difficult to do. Capturing people standing still is one thing, but capturing your friends and family in the middle of beautiful moments all while still looking their best is one of the most difficult techniques that we have to use while capturing your wedding. Some moments are special, some moments are radical and fun; but all moments deserve to be documented.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEXT BATCH OF IMAGES, AND THEN READ ON…

… When we approach a wedding, I always remind my team that we want to tell a story of the day, but we want to be very thoughtful about how we tell the story AND be very purposeful on how we approach our lighting and our photography style. If you are considering Sun & Sparrow as your wedding photographers, or if you are looking into night time or low light situation photography, it’s very important that you find someone who you trust to have a consistent product. There are many photographers out there that can shoot a great portrait in the day time, but only have one flash on top of their camera for reception lighting.

My greatest desire is that your wedding can be it’s best AND that you can have an amazing photo team behind you whom you can trust fully.
