Glamorous desert engagement at Vasquez Rocks // Gerardo & Sharlene

©2015 Sun & Sparrow Photography // Glamorous desert engagement at Vasquez Rocks

FROM THE BRIDE // It was just another normal Saturday. Gerardo had put together a nice date night for us which consisted of dinner at Perch in Downtown LA followed by Disneyland! I got ready as I normally did and kissed my parents goodbye. “Donden van?” (Where are you guys going) they asked. “Oh, just dinner & disneyland”. And so I left. Dinner was nothing out of the norm. Gerardo managed to make me laugh throughout dinner as he always does with his amazing sense of humor. Little did I know that just a week before he had shown up to my parents house unannounced to ask for my hand in marriage and for their blessing. And so dinner carried on and we were soon on our way to my favorite and happiest place on earth: Disneyland. Or so I thought. Gerardo managed to find an excuse to get us back to my house and an even better excuse for us to go inside (he said he had to use the restroom, badly!). He started to rush me and insisted I open the door as soon as possible and so I laughed and rushed to open the door. When I opened the door, I noticed rose pedals and candles leading to the backyard! At this point, I remember saying aloud, “What the…is this?” I immediately thought that I had walked in on my parents having a date night of their own…that is until I heard our song, “Eres” start playing. It was in that moment I knew exactly what was happening. I was in shock and speechless, as tears streamed down my face. He grabbed my hand, told me to breathe, and led me to the backyard. It was like a real dream. The backyard was full of roses. He led me to a part of the backyard that had handwritten letters from our family and closest friends, all sending us their best and congratulating us on this very special moment. He of course had to read them aloud since I could barley see through all my tears. He then walked me to another part of the backyard where pictures of us over the past 10 years were hanging, as well as pictures of our families and closest friends. He grabbed my hand once more and walked me to the center of the patio where a heart shaped had been made of rose pedals. There, he got on one knee and asked me to marry him.  After saying yes and hugging each other for a bit, He said, “Okay, let me get everyone they are all inside the house hiding!” So out came my family and his family, as well as my two closest friends! After more hugs, tears, and more hugs, the backyard was once more transformed to host an engagement dinner! It was all just a dream and a night full of so much love!

Griffith Park engagement // Peter & Karen

Etherial engagement at Griffith Park // ©2016 Sun & Sparrow Los Angeles wedding and engagement photographer

We had talked a lot about marriage in the year leading up to the proposal and had even gone shopping to look at rings. I started to watch for hints from Peter…perhaps a weekend getaway trip, a date night at a special restaurant…as it turns out, the day that Peter proposed was a typical lazy wear-pajamas-all-day Saturday for us.

Peter had been nursing me through a terrible cold that week and I was still feeling too miserable to go out. I did, however, need to take my car to get it serviced that afternoon. Peter offered to pick up takeout for lunch from one of our usual restaurants, so I stayed home with my DayQuil to rest. 45 minutes later and he wasn’t home yet…I was starting to get hungry…1 hour later and I was starting to worry, but also I was Hangry! Finally, he came home with food and groceries and a story about how the credit card machine at the restaurant was broken. I believed his story because all I wanted to do was dive into my lunch and eat! I only found out later that he used that time to pick up flowers for the proposal!
Fast forward an couple hours later and I came home from getting my car serviced. I was fumbling to find keys to the front door when Peter opened it. I heard John Legend’s “All of Me” playing in the background with rose petals leading up to a bouquet of roses on the table. On it had a card that read “From me and Mocha, now go give Mocha a kiss!” (Mocha is our little dachshund). I stooped down to give Mocha a kiss and Peter said “do you notice any new bling on her?” I was looking for a ring, but couldn’t find it! Mocha had a new dog tag that read “Will you & Mocha marry me”. I stood up with tears in my eyes and that’s when Peter proposed. Of course I said yes! We are so excited to be starting this new chapter of our lives together.

Three tips for choosing wedding vendors that you’ll love!

Choosing your wedding vendors may seem like a challenge. There are so many people out there that have so many offerings and prices. How do you choose amongst them all?!?  Here are a few tips that we have learned over the years to help in making decisions for all wedding vendors and venues.

1. Falling in love.

We always recommend that you work with people who you connect and fall in love with on a personal level. When we talk about falling in love, we are talking about falling “in love” with your vendor as a person.  Having someone who you connect with on a personal level, as well as a professional level, is so important! You want to be able to communicate your vision clearly and feel heard as well as feel championed! When you choose someone you love, you can be confident in knowing your vendor team is going to execute your vision, be there for you, and create something beautiful with their expertise.

2. Trusting in a vendors portfolio.

What you see in a vendor’s portfolio from “real weddings” is what you can hope to expect on your wedding day. Take your time to look through a portfolio from “real weddings” they have worked on as lead vendors (i.e. coordinators, florists, photographers, hair & makeup artists, etc) to see consistency in their artistry. It’s always beneficial to dig deeper than first glance. One of our favorite things we can hear from a potential client is that they have spent hours browsing our instagram or blog, and are completely IN LOVE with our work. I’m sure every wedding vendor would tell you the same thing! We love when our clients have taken time to immerse themselves in our work and fall in love with what we do!

3. Connecting with the vision.

Connecting with their vision for the design of your day is super important.  When choosing wedding pros, it’s important to be able to trust their artistry, but also connecting to your vision for your day. It’s always a good idea to ensure your vendor’s design style, their values, and their vision lines up with yours, so you can be confident you are on the same page on the deepest level.

Wedding vendors are creatives and each person has their own voice in artistry.  With any artist, it’s very important to see if their voice is “harmonious” with yours. Some questions you might consider are, “In their past weddings, have they designed a wedding that I absolutely die over?” “Can they design something similar for me?” “Does my vendor have my budget in mind?” “Does this vendor seem interested in hearing my vision?” “Do they seem like a team player?” “Are their values for family, friends, details, hair, makeup, florals,  romantics, etc. in sync with mine?”

Once you’ve found your dream team of vendors that care about your dream day, we hope that you can relax with confidence! Your dream team will be connected and confident about your dream wedding day coming to life.

We are so privileged to be able to share these three tips for choosing wedding vendors with all of you! One thing that we absolutely love about the wedding industry is that we get to be creative with our clients through our process. Why is this awesome? …Because you get to trust each coordinator, florist, photographer, calligrapher, etc in their own craft and watch each element unfold within your vision. It’s our dream that you will be able to look back and remember your love story beautifully. Hopefully, these 3 tips are essentials to helping your vendors collaborate and make dream wedding become reality!

with love, Ellie & Tiffani

Dreamy Secret field in the fall // Ryan & Kalie

Dreamy Engagement Session in Palos Verdes

©2019 Sun & Sparrow // Romantic Wedding Photographers in Southern California

From the Groom:

Kalie and I met freshman year of high school. I was the talkative and outgoing one. She was the quiet, shy one. We passed in the halls for 3 1/2 years, even had a few classes without really knowing one another. It wasn’t until our high school government class that I started to spend time with her and get to know the real Kalie. After we studied together one night, I realized that I had fallen for the beauty of her mind and soul. A couple months after that night, we started dating. Although we have had our ups and downs in the past 7 years, by the grace of God, we are stronger than ever and growing every day.

I realized that I wanted to marry Kalie and bought her ring in October. Waiting was the hardest part, but after speaking to her parents in February, I asked her to marry me on March 8, 2019.

The day of the proposal I put together an amazing plan that included her family. Her parents and sister took her to dinner and offered to “invite me,” but I told her I couldn’t because of church obligations.  During their dinner, I went to Roessler Point  in Palos Verdes to set up the lights and candles at the gazebo to prepare for the proposal. Kalie’s family drove her to up the winding roads to Roessler Point.  On the way, they blindfolded her telling her there was a surprise for her graduation present. They walked her to the gazebo and took off the blindfold where she was greeted by lights everywhere. There was also a binder with instructions. She was given headphones to listen to special handpicked love songs. As she spent time reading through the binder, I met her in the gazebo. She was surprised to see me. We chatted for a bit, and, finally, I asked my best friend to marry me.

We get married May 29, 2020, and couldn’t be more thankful that God blessed us with each other. I couldn’t be more excited for the day to come that we say I do! I’m sure a lifetime with her won’t be long enough.

Note from Sun & Sparrow:

Our biggest dream is for every engagement to be a magical love story, both when you’re taking your photos and when you see your photos for the first time. This dreamy engagement session of Ryan & Kalie, truly tells their love story. These two are both silly and snuggly as well as romantic and whimsical.  We are in love with the way they connected with one another. Their hearts were so full of love, you can truly see it in their photos.
