How to ask your friend to be a bridesmaid //

Finding the perfect wedding photographer for you can be challenging. But when you find a photographer you connect with, someone who sees your vision, then you will have the right match.

Hello Sparrows! My name is Claudia & I’ve been working with Sun & Sparrow for over a year, helping at weddings and building my portfolio.  I’m very excited to be part of the Sun & Sparrow team! One of the best perks to working with Sun & Sparrow is that I am able to share one of my favorite pastimes…. DIY crafts for parties and weddings. In this first edition of my SIMPLE DIY IDEAS, I wanted to share a little bit about my upcoming wedding and how I asked my friends to be my bridesmaids. With that, I’d love to share how to ask your friend to be your bridesmaid.

My fiancé and I have been dating for 6 years and engaged for about a year and a half. That being said, I have had alot of time to plan my wedding in my head. That may sound like an advatage, but it has left lots of room for changing my mind about it very often! It wasn’t until I decided to stop trying to copy every idea that’s out there on Pinterest or wedding blogs (and changing my mind after anything new came out) that I finally came to a design idea that was totally ME and US.

We are both simple people that love to hang out with family and friends. This is how we decided that casual and easy-going was the best style for our upcoming wedding. I love crafts, both doing them and the final outcome. I have titled the style of my wedding “Sweet, Crafty Romance” because it sums up the girly touches, the DIY approach, and the love between us both and our loved ones. I chose to mainly DIY my wedding so that my fiancé and I could have fun selecting and working on projects, as well as getting my fairly large bridal party involved in the process! So far, we have had a couple projects where we’ve worked together and it has been so fun reminiscing on old times and getting excited for our big day.

The majority of my guests speak Spanish (in fact, many of our family members speak ONLY spanish), so we decided to use strictly Spanish in both our stationary and our wedding day activities. I wanted to give my guests a little peek at what’s to come with my Save the Dates. I had a quick shoot with my sister with some outfits coordinated to our wedding colors for our cards (pink, blue, ivory and a hint of gold). The card itself was something quick and simple that I came up with on Photoshop, ordered it as a postcard from www vistaprint.com, and put together with a little heart-shaped confetti and sparkly ribbon. I also added our favorite bible verse to the back of my card, as we are dedicating our marriage to God, even starting from the planning. It was so simple, inexpensive, and it has really made an impact. My guests are so excited to get a first glimpse at our wedding and plans.

I mentioned that I have a large bridal party, 13 girls that are so special and dear to me. I wanted to make something extra special for them as a way to ask them to be my bridesmaids. I looked around on Pinterest for some inspiration and decided on a goodie box for each girl (see my inspiration board here: http://pinterest.com/claudiaandalex/the-girls/). I purchased some inexpensive boxes from Joanne’s and used the same materials I used for the save the dates to dress them up. I made some quick cards on photoshop and had them printed at Costco as 4X6 and trimmed them down to the size I needed and included information about their dresses, our wedding day, and their roles in the wedding. Everyone that knows me knows that I LOVE nail polish. It’s a serious addiction! So I thougth it would be so fitting to gift them each their own shade of pink polish to wear at the wedding (my MOH’s got a shade of blue). I also included some gold candies in the box, first of all because they are my favorite, and second because they matched our wedding colors! I enjoyed giving each bridesmaid their gift as a small thank you for being such great friends, and a plus was that I got to explain alot of questions they may have had for me after I asked them to be part of my day.

Thanks for reading about my projects! I look forward to working with Sun & Sparrow and bringing you more how to’s on simple projects that are cute and budget friendly. I’m so excited to marry my best friend, and to spend time with those that I love so dearly getting ready for my magical day!

Barry & Jennifer Desert Love // Cree Estate Desert Wedding // Palm Springs wedding photographers

We were engaged in October of 2011 and, beyond a brief discussion regarding our desire for an outdoor “faux destination” wedding, we didn’t begin actively planning our Big Day until around six months out.  Following the prolonged “inspiration period”, we eventually decided to have a spring wedding at Cree Estate in Cathedral City, outside of Palm Springs on March 30, 2013.  We quickly started referring to our wedding by its catchy date, “03.30.13”.

During the planning process, we decided our priorities were to have a wedding that was relaxed, family-centric, and featured music that would make everyone dance!  We were most excited about the prospect of having all our friends and family meet each other, so we incorporated a table seating game into our cocktail hour to encourage our guests to interact.  A nod to Jennifer’s Chinese heritage was worked in with a red dress outfit change and a layer of taro-flavored wedding cake.   We also wanted to incorporate the beauty of the spring season and desert setting into our wedding theme.  We used a fiery, desert sunset color palette for the invitations, dresses and family-style table settings.  We also threw in a gratuitous use of eggs (it was Easter weekend after all), which included a giant paper mache egg that served as a card box.

But it was the universe, with all its magic, that helped us to accomplish our themes better than we could.  From the little bunnies and ducks running around the property, to the blooming cacti and lush grass, to the bright, round moon – it was already written that 03.30.13 was the perfect day to celebrate our new beginning as husband and wife.  The wedding turned out to be so much more than we could have dreamed.  The feeling of being surrounded by those you love, and feeling their love by their very presence, is indescribable.  There were so many special moments that overwhelmed us with love and happiness.  We are grateful to those who helped make the day possible.

• WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU & WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?   //  All our friends who have gotten married advised us to invest in an experienced photographer to ensure we would have good photos to remember the day.  We were most excited to see photos of moments we weren’t able to fully take in because we were busy running around.  We chose Sun & Sparrow based on it price point, package offerings, and a great recommendation from Barry’s co-worker.  We worked with Tiffani throughout the whole process and absolutely loved it.

• DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES TO BE?  //  Find vendors whose instincts and tastes you trust.  Jennifer tried making a heart wreath for the ceremony altar, but it ended up looking like a disaster.  We were fortunate to be working with Britton of Tend Living.  She had the vision to rescue it, plop it among the cacti, and turn it into one of our favorite elements in the wedding – all on game day!

Ellie’s vintage styled bridal shower // A Sun & Sparrow girl is getting married!!!

Being a wedding & event photographer, I absolutely love taking pictures. If you are a consistent reader of our blog, I’m sure you’ve been able to pick up on the fact that we absolutely LOVE…. ALL THE DETAILS! One thing that we truly love, but might not always show, is how much people show love for one another. It’s so obvious at weddings that brides and grooms are madly in love, affectionate, and are so happy! But there is so much more to a wedding than the ‘Wedding Day’ and all of the pretty decor. I’m so excited to share Ellie’s vintage styled bridal shower!

The more that I strive to be a good wedding photographer, the more I fall in love with what marriage is about. Marriage is about two people committing to one another AND marriage is about family and friends standing behind that commitment! Wow! It’s so amazing that I get to stand behind all of our clients and say that I truly believe in what you are doing. I believe in your marriage, your long life together, your hope for a solid and committed future!

With all that said, I wanted to introduce my sister’s Bridal Shower. Ellie (one of our esteemed photographers) is getting married on June 28! It’s coming around the corner and as the maid of honor, I wanted to do something special for her. So, I got my pinterest board together… http://pinterest.com/sunandsparrow/ellie-s-bridal-shower/ and I went to town. Really, I went overboard. Because I see so many awesome weddings and awesome details, I decided that this was the moment to create a masterpiece (which was to say the least, a little ridiculous). The more that the details came together, the more creative I became.

The whole day began with the idea of a citrus inspired day. So, I thought of all the things that we could include into a CITRUSY INSPIRED DAY! Of course I immediately began with food!  Grapefruit & Feta salads, mint lemonade, peach iced tea, fruit, lemons, limes and all the like! From there, ideas of colors came into mind! Colors that coordinated with the food (of course), lime, orange, peach, and then beautiful florals. So, from there, I made cute banners & streamers. I purchased KRAFT-COLORED BUTCHER PAPER for all of the banners & even for the table coverings! I used that butcher paper everywhere! After that, I thought that doilies would add a cute & feminine touch to the day, so I got clear plates and put the doilies under them. But I didn’t stop there, when I realized that I had purchased too many. Once again, I got creative. We hung doilies in everything starting in the streamer-banners and even hung them from the trees.

These are all DIY projects that are absolutely doable for anyone. If you read below, I have explained how to do 3 DIY projects so that you can style your bridal shower just like ours!

I honestly wanted Ellie to have a beautiful and memorable day. Beyond all of the decor, the whole point of making a bridal shower is to make a day that the bride can drink in all of the love and support from family and friends. We had so many wonderful people who came and showered her with gifts and praise. My favorite part about the whole day, when all was said and done, was that Ellie had been so moved. She cried most of the day and smiled the rest. I couldn’t have asked for a better sister! And I couldn’t have asked for a more deserving person to share this special day with!

This doilie backdrop was a fluke that just happened when I realized that I had too many extra doilies. We just strung twine through 8-10 doilies on each strand. It was super easy to hang each strand on a different tree branch. I brought chairs from my own living room and VOILA, we had a free and super cute place for a photo booth! Make sure to ask a friend to be in charge of the photos, though. You don’t want to have a photobooth without a person to encourage photo taking.

For me, it’s extremely important to tie your decor together. Make sure that if you have one idea, that you have a place to repeat that idea. It makes your day and your decor feel complete. I made two of these banners, one for inside & one for outside. Both used the same color ribbons & doilies and both were strung up by jute-twine. Making these were super easy! Ellie & I went to our local swap meet and bought colorful ‘citrusy’ fabric. We just cut a few notches in the fabric, then ripped it all apart. We didn’t need to hem every piece because we loved the torn & rustic look of it all. Then we tied the strips to the twine & hung it up.

This is where our DIY creativity, got difficult. One of my good friends, Claudia (who is also my second shooter), came over with her Cricut paper cutter. She and I had a field day cutting new shapes and trying to figure out how to make these labels. They turned out awesome, but I have to say that these labels cost the most to make AND took the most time. We had to cut 3 different sized papers with our cool Cricut machine, then glue them all together. If you are going to take on a project like this, definitely take some time to figure out exactly what you want first. Then you and your friends can execute it all.

Another cool food label that I put together were the paper straw flags! For those, I used kraft paper and just cut little strips with “e&p” printed on them. When I glued them onto the straws, I cut a triangle out from the edges. It was super easy to do and made Ellie & Peter’s logo shine!

OK, This is where it gets special! After all of the decor was made and after all of the guests had arrived, I wanted Ellie’s bridal shower to be super special and memorable. Here are some beautiful moments from the day! Friends and family got to share about how to be an amazing & Godly wife. Ellie even was blessed enough to get some family heirlooms. I’m so jealous and excited that she gets to have a wonderful wedding super soon.

Since we had the opportunity to style this amazing bridal shower, I thought it best to give my sister an official ‘BRIDAL SHOWER PHOTO SESSION.’ So, here it is, a beautiful day for a beautiful lady, styled from head to toe! Don’t you love the matching bow in her hair? It matches the decor!  { A special shout out to one of our brides, Stacy Gibson, for making Ellie look so awesome! }
