Dave & Dulce // Travel Town Engagement

March 2013 //  It was an early Saturday morning in Big Bear, and with nerves of steel (aided by an early morning whisky), Dave was finally ready. Months of research, trips to the LA Diamond district, and careful planning had lead up to today, and with the ring safely tucked into the least conspicuous pocket of his snowboard pants, he and Dulce made their way to the ski lift. His heart had not beat this fast on a lift before, not even his first time skiing when he was all but certain he would fall flat on has face at the top (fun fact: Dulce ended up falling flat on her face later that day). He ran through the brief but carefully thought out words he would say, knowing that she would be completely surprised in just a few minutes. At the mountain top, strapped into his boots, Dave started into the “speech.” He could see that Dulce wasn’t fully processing what was happening, but as she asked “Are you serious?!” he simply replied “yes,” and pulled out the ring. After a kiss, made somewhat awkward by the helmets they were both wearing, he slid the ring onto her finger, and they snowboarded down to the congratulations of their friends. The rest of the morning was a blur of phone calls in between snowboarding.

Maura & Fredy // A lovely rustic wedding in San Pedro

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY AND YOUR WEDDING DAY EXPERIENCE IN A PARAGRAPH OR TWO…  //  My wedding day has most definitely been one of the best days of my life. On February 1st of 2014, I woke up anxious, a little nervous, and yet so excited to see my groom on the day of our wedding. To be honest though, when it came to décor I didn’t know what to expect. Fredy and I met with our coordinators a few times, bounced ideas, and they just seemed to get us. They caught the vision in our hearts. The 14 months we were engaged gave me enough time to dream up and play and replay any scenarios in my head of how I believed the wedding would go. Would my groom smile when he saw me walk down the isle? Would he cry? Would he be as anxious as I was to see him that day? All of that to say, reality was definitely better then my dreams.

Our family and friends showed so much support and love. Our vendors were amazing. And I don’t think I will ever stop thanking God for my husband and all the precious and amazing people I met through this journey. It was definitely an experience with many highs and lows, but an exciting one at that!
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?  // Most of my inspiration for the wedding actually came from the creativity of the team we hired to coordinate. I came to them with a handful of pictures, a dream, and a desire to marry my best friend. When it came to specific things like the ceremony, we trusted our loved ones, our friends, and vendors to be creative.

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //  There were way too many precious moments on that day to have kept count. I couldn’t tell anyone what the most memorable part of the day was. It changes every time I’m asked that question. The first look was definitely a highlight. Seeing my handsome groom for the very first time that day before the church was worth breaking tradition for. I loved being able to hold him and tell him how much I love him in such intimacy. I also cherish the few moments I got to spend dancing with my Father (I cried like a baby!), The moment where Fredy sang “Sweet Caroline” in front of everyone. He would only ever do it in private, and it came as such a sweet surprise. When our dear friends from Shepherd’s Son played a surprise set for us. The intimacy and meaning behind the feet washing during the ceremony was definitely one of the most memorable things, but I could go on forever so I’ll stop there.

WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU?  //  Photography was important to me for this occasion because I know I’ll never marry another man again. I would like to show my future children, God willing in the years to come that I am still in love with the man I vowed to love February 1st 2014. Besides, I knew that my family would all be asking for copies and to see pictures.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?  //  Every now and then even before even getting engaged I would visit the Sun & Sparrow blog to admire the beautiful shots of love & joy captured through a camera lens. I chose Sun & Sparrow because it was what my heart wanted. I know that sounds corny, but I’m not kidding when I say that Fredy and I prayed in the car one day after speaking to our sweet photographer. We wanted nothing short of the best, and although we weren’t sure we could afford the absolute best. I consider the pleasure of having Sun & Sparrow shoot our wedding a blessing and a miracle! After speaking to the photographer over email a few times, Fredy and I had to make it happen. Our photographer is one of the sweetest girls I have ever had the privilege to meet. We chose Sun & Sparrow because of their great connection with us. I truly felt that my photographer really cared about us, and our wedding pictures. She even made a secret pinboard for us to share ideas!

DID YOU DO ANY DIY PROJECTS? IF SO, WHAT?  //  Fortunately, the team we hired did all the DIY’s ! The only DIY I worked on with the help of one of my awesome bridesmaids Sarah, was bedazzling an awesome pair of budget friendly heels for the big day! I also went to downtown LA and chose my own fabric for my wedding gown. I had a family friend make a design a chose!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?  //  My advice to any brides would be to hire coordinators! They are a tremendous help. I was able to work 3 jobs all while planning a wedding, but I could not have done it with out Fancy The Engagement! Second, Be organized! Unfortunately I had so much going on, I dropped the ball when it came to being organized. Thankfully everything worked out, but I would also advise any brides who are opting for an intimate wedding to try not to share too many details of the wedding with people who aren’t involved in planning. Also, don’t forget to have fun!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //  My favorite part about being married is that I get to hang out with my best friend every single day. I get to make him laugh as much as I want, whenever I want, and distance is no longer a factor. We have been best friends for over 9 years and even though back then I never imagined we would end up together, I never imagined my life without him. My favorite thing about being married is that he is mine and I am forever his. He is so funny and so much fun! I just can’t believe we didn’t get married sooner.

PLEASE COMMENT BELOW AND TELL MAURA & FREDY HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM!!

Ellie’s vintage styled bridal shower // A Sun & Sparrow Girl is getting married!!!

SOMETHING TURQUOISE FEATURED THIS EVENT ON THEIR BLOG! CLICK HERE TO SEE IT ON THEIR SITE!

Being a wedding & event photographer, I absolutely love taking pictures. If you are a consistent reader of our blog, I’m sure you’ve been able to pick up on the fact that we absolutely LOVE…. ALL THE DETAILS! One thing that we truly love, but might not always show, is how much people show love for one another. It’s so obvious at weddings that brides and grooms are madly in love, affectionate, and are so happy! But there is so much more to a wedding than the ‘Wedding Day’ and all of the pretty decor. I’m so excited to share Ellie’s vintage styled bridal shower!

The more that I strive to be a good wedding photographer, the more I fall in love with what marriage is about. Marriage is about two people committing to one another AND marriage is about family and friends standing behind that commitment! Wow! It’s so amazing that I get to stand behind all of our clients and say that I truly believe in what you are doing. I believe in your marriage, your long life together, your hope for a solid and committed future!

With all that said, I wanted to introduce my sister’s Bridal Shower. Ellie (one of our esteemed photographers) is getting married on June 28! It’s coming around the corner and as the maid of honor, I wanted to do something special for her. So, I got my pinterest board together… http://pinterest.com/sunandsparrow/ellie-s-bridal-shower/ and I went to town. Really, I went overboard. Because I see so many awesome weddings and awesome details, I decided that this was the moment to create a masterpiece (which was to say the least, a little ridiculous). The more that the details came together, the more creative I became.

The whole day began with the idea of a citrus inspired day. So, I thought of all the things that we could include into a CITRUSY INSPIRED DAY! Of course I immediately began with food!  Grapefruit & Feta salads, mint lemonade, peach iced tea, fruit, lemons, limes and all the like! From there, ideas of colors came into mind! Colors that coordinated with the food (of course), lime, orange, peach, and then beautiful florals. So, from there, I made cute banners & streamers. I purchased KRAFT-COLORED BUTCHER PAPER for all of the banners & even for the table coverings! I used that butcher paper everywhere! After that, I thought that doilies would add a cute & feminine touch to the day, so I got clear plates and put the doilies under them. But I didn’t stop there, when I realized that I had purchased too many. Once again, I got creative. We hung doilies in everything starting in the streamer-banners and even hung them from the trees.

I ALSO WANTED TO GIVE A HUGE SHOUT OUT TO CHOURA EVENTS FOR HELPING US WITH OUR RENTALS!

These are all DIY projects that are absolutely doable for anyone. If you read below, I have explained how to do 3 DIY projects so that you can style your bridal shower just like ours!

I honestly wanted Ellie to have a beautiful and memorable day. Beyond all of the decor, the whole point of making a bridal shower is to make a day that the bride can drink in all of the love and support from family and friends. We had so many wonderful people who came and showered her with gifts and praise. My favorite part about the whole day, when all was said and done, was that Ellie had been so moved. She cried most of the day and smiled the rest. I couldn’t have asked for a better sister! And I couldn’t have asked for a more deserving person to share this special day with!

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

 DIY PROJECT #1  : DOILIE BACKDROP FOR A PHOTO BOOTH!

This doilie backdrop was a fluke that just happened when I realized that I had too many extra doilies. We just strung twine through 8-10 doilies on each strand. It was super easy to hang each strand on a different tree branch. I brought chairs from my own living room and VOILA, we had a free and super cute place for a photo booth! Make sure to ask a friend to be in charge of the photos, though. You don’t want to have a photobooth without a person to encourage photo taking.

DIY PROJECT #2:  MAKING STREAMER-BANNERS

For me, it’s extremely important to tie your decor together. Make sure that if you have one idea, that you have a place to repeat that idea. It makes your day and your decor feel complete. I made two of these banners, one for inside & one for outside. Both used the same color ribbons & doilies and both were strung up by jute-twine. Making these were super easy! Ellie & I went to our local swap meet and bought colorful ‘citrusy’ fabric. We just cut a few notches in the fabric, then ripped it all apart. We didn’t need to hem every piece because we loved the torn & rustic look of it all. Then we tied the strips to the twine & hung it up.

DIY PROJECT #3 : HOME MADE FOOD LABELS

This is where our DIY creativity, got difficult. One of my good friends, Claudia (who is also my second shooter), came over with her Cricut paper cutter. She and I had a field day cutting new shapes and trying to figure out how to make these labels. They turned out awesome, but I have to say that these labels cost the most to make AND took the most time. We had to cut 3 different sized papers with our cool Cricut machine, then glue them all together. If you are going to take on a project like this, definitely take some time to figure out exactly what you want first. Then you and your friends can execute it all.

Another cool food label that I put together were the paper straw flags! For those, I used kraft paper and just cut little strips with “e&p” printed on them. When I glued them onto the straws, I cut a triangle out from the edges. It was super easy to do and made Ellie & Peter’s logo shine!

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

OK, This is where it gets special! After all of the decor was made and after all of the guests had arrived, I wanted Ellie’s bridal shower to be super special and memorable. Here are some beautiful moments from the day! Friends and family got to share about how to be an amazing & Godly wife. Ellie even was blessed enough to get some family heirlooms. I’m so jealous and excited that she gets to have a wonderful wedding super soon.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

 ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Since we had the opportunity to style this amazing bridal shower, I thought it best to give my sister an official ‘BRIDAL SHOWER PHOTO SESSION.’ So, here it is, a beautiful day for a beautiful lady, styled from head to toe! Don’t you love the matching bow in her hair? It matches the decor!  { A special shout out to one of our brides, Stacy Gibson, for making Ellie look so awesome! }
