how she did it

FROM THE BRIDE //
We decided to have a small wedding because we wanted to be surrounded by those people who knew us the best. We strived to make our wedding feel warm and intimate, as if it were a simple family gathering. We held the ceremony very close to our hearts and wanted our closest and biggest supporters with us as we committed our lives to each other.
Luckily, our experience was just as we hoped. We were able to enjoy a family style dinner, meaning all 21 of us sat around one large table, and devoured each course together as one unit. No sweetheart table, no toasts, no running around trying to say hello to everyone while we grabbed a bite here and there. It was blissful. But wait, there is more, to finish the night off, we all sat around roasting s’mores (the groom’s favorite treat), telling stories, and sharing laughter. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?  //  Initially, we wanted to elope to Tuscany. However, the thought of having our big day without our loved ones just did not feel right to us. With this, we looked within California to find a place that evoked the same sense and romance that Italy seemed to provide. The San Ysidro Ranch had so many elements that made us melt into puddles of awe. From the lavender to the rustic feel of the wine cellar and patio, we knew from the second we arrived that this was our place.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //   Without a doubt, our favorite moment was the private moment that we shared immediately after the ceremony. The groom and I made our way away from the ceremony area and for the first time, we’re alone as husband and wife. We both took one look at each other and burst into tears. We were both so overcome with emotion and dumbstruck by the beauty of what had just occurred.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?  //  Just keep in mind what the day truly is about. It should be the most beautiful day of your lives together as a couple. You are there to make the ultimate commitment to each other. When it all boils down, the day is so much more than a wedding. I would also say to remember that there are no rules! We did everything exactly as we felt. No DJ, no dancing, no cake- but we continue to receive compliments that it was the most beautiful wedding our guests have ever attended.
Also, etsy and Pinterest are your best friend!!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //   Being able to really plan our future together. We continue to do and enjoy all that we did before but now with the feeling that we forever have a partner to experience all of life’s moments with. It is something we both truly cherish.

how she did itJimmy and I wanted our wedding decor to include things from our family heritage as well as make it very romantic and magical. I love romance and Shakespeare. My favorite moment of my wedding day was when I was preparing to walk down the aisle to meet my husband in front of our families and friends. I remember being super nervous and excited waiting for that moment. Even though we’ve been together for almost 10 years, I still felt the butterflies in my stomach and had the sweaty palms.

Photography was the most important to us because the memories captured will last us a lifetime. I want to show my future children and grandchildren our photos. When we were researching photographers, we wanted someone who not only fit the style we wanted, but someone we are comfortable with. Tiffani and Ellie are both wonderful and would do anything to make sure you get all the important moments during your big day! My advice for brides-to-be who are currently in the planning process is to make sure you find a great photographer. Your wedding is only a day, but the memories captured will last forever.

David & Dulce // Romantic Vintage Los Angeles wedding

how she did it

©2014 Sun & Sparrow // Thanks to our associate Claudia Hurtarte for shooting at this wedding! // Romantic Vintage Los Angeles wedding

FROM THE BRIDE //   We’ve been living in Downtown Los Angeles for over 4 years. We’ve had front row seats to the “Downtown Renaissance” and absolutely love living in the middle of so much change. There’s excitement in the air. We really wanted to show our friends and family what we get to experience on a day-to-day basis. Downtown naturally has this old-school glamorous feel. As soon as we walked into Cicada, just a few blocks from our loft, we knew it was the place. Everything else just flowed with that 1920s glamorous vibe.

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY? // Hers: David’s reaction during the first look. It was priceless. My second favorite was dancing with my grandfather to an old mariachi song “Mi Niña Bonita”. My grandmother passed away recently and was a huge mariachi fan. It was a very special moment.  //  His: All of it.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?  //  We were first introduced to Sun & Sparrow through the videography twins. Once we saw photos and met Tiffani, we knew we had to have the whole team at our wedding. There was such a classy and elegant flair to their work and we needed a talented team to capture our day.

DID YOU DO ANY DIY PROJECTS? IF SO, WHAT?  //  We did a few DIY projects and my best advice is to start early. You definitely don’t want to be doing any DIY in the weeks leading up to the wedding. For our guest gifts/table decorations we bought little 2×3 frames and filled them with pictures of the two of us and the people sitting at the table. It was our way to make them feel special. We chose the “Up” score to process to, so we also made the iconic mailbox from the movie with “David & Dulce” painted on the side of it with our handprints.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //  There’s a certain gravitas that comes with marriage. We’re both enjoying that feeling.
