Eleana: Excited but also kind of stressed out. I’m mostly practical and I wanted to make sure that everything that could be controlled/handled were taken care of for the vendors and the guests. I was really looking forward to my friends coming to spend the morning with me while I got ready too; having the support of your ladies is so essential and since I didn’t have a wedding party, I was extra glad that they were taking the time out of their schedule to hang out. I was excited to see Mike (we slept in separate rooms the night before) and do the First Look, since I felt that would be a big moment for us.Mike: Felt normal the morning of the wedding. Met up with some friends and ate breakfast and got my hair done. As we were driving to the venue, got a bit more anxious, arrived at the venue and started to get ready. Just looking forward to getting to the venue so that I would be ready on time.
Eleana: First Look; I was nervous but also really calm. I hoped he would like my dress! When he turned around, he started crying and then I started crying (though probably not as much as him). I told him to stop since it would ruin all my make-up.Mike: We had a first look moment. I got emotional and had tears running down as I saw my beautiful wife in her dress. She looked beautiful and and dress had this long train that looked amazing.
Eleana: Probably when Mike was drunk and slid across the dance floor on this knees to give me a lap dance – it was definitely a goal achieved. The ceremony was really well done by both the pastor (who is Mike’s friend) and the reading done by my cousin. I think the moments with my dad were also really special – and of course, all the moments with friends. I definitely felt like I couldn’t/didn’t give anyone enough of the time that they deserved and I’m so thankful for all the help/love/support (even from some friends who weren’t able to make it to the actual wedding!). And some of the drunk people that had to be carried out (no names will be named).Mike: There were many favorite moments from the wedding day. The first look was unforgettable. Just seeing all our family and friends. The ceremony was good. The speeches were good. The food was good. Enjoyed drinking and dancing and just spending time with everyone.
Eleana: The venue, for one, was amazing. It definitely didn’t feel like we were in Los Angeles and we were transported somewhere else with our guests. The atmosphere of fun and happiness from our loved ones really contributed to the day; it was great knowing they were there for us and were celebrating our next step together. Though now that we’re married, it doesn’t feel any different than before (which I think is a good thing).Mike: The weather was perfect and the feel from the venue gave good energy. Did not seem like we were in a big city.
We love this session!

My husband and I met in graduate school when I was 24 and we started dating within that next year. We waited until after graduation to get married so we could save enough money for our wedding. By that time I was 28 years old, and we were not ready to start a family yet. My parents were able to spend around 7 years of marriage together before starting a family, but they were much younger than us when they got married and we couldn’t wait that long. Unfortunately, I suffered from both physical and mental barriers that would push back our attempt at conceiving for several months. My husband was my rock during this time and that only made me more eager to want to start our family together. We were able to start trying shortly after our first anniversary.
The excitement and nerves were like nothing I had ever experienced. I was excited for our future and nervous about how long it may take to happen. Thankfully, we were very blessed and I was able to surprise my husband with a positive test just two weeks after we started trying. Being pregnant for the first time is magical and unexplainable. People tell you what you can expect to happen, but everyone is so different. I wound up being nauseous 24/7 for the first 12 weeks, and I spent of lot of this time second guessing my body’s ability to handle pregnancy. Fortunately, the nausea went away after my 12th week and I soon after felt my baby begin to move. The pregnancy overall has been smooth and our baby has been healthy. Throughout this entire process I have felt so much love from my husband. I feel like he has stepped up to be a father in so many ways already. I wanted our maternity pictures to demonstrate the ever growing love we have for each other and how much of a blessing this pregnancy has been. We are in love with our magical forest maternity in Oak Glen!
We are so excited and cannot wait to share our love with our little girl.

Travis and Stephanie met in the college dorms at the University of Chicago. Their chemistry was undeniable from the first time they met; however, dating Stephanie would violate Travis’ #1 rule as a college senior – NO DATING FRESHMAN. After months of flirting, Travis finally decided to break his own rules and they started dating in April 2007. Two months later, Travis graduated and moved to St. Louis for graduate school while Stephanie finished her degree in Chicago. They continued to date long-distance for 7 years as they pursued their careers in different states. Travis traveled back and forth between St. Louis and Chicago almost every weekend. In 2014, Travis followed Stephanie to LA so they could finally live together and get married. Their August 2014 Chicago wedding was an absolute dream, but tragically the photos didn’t turn out. The devastation of the photography nightmare was quickly cast aside as they got pregnant with their first child. Now, nearly two years after the wedding, they finally have wedding photos that reflect the true magic and romance of their wedding day!
We are so honored to have been a part of this beautiful anniversary session. Travis & Stephanie came to us to photograph their wedding day a few years after their wedding. They wanted a beautiful fairytale to commemorate their love. We are so honored and blessed to help them have their fairytale dream wedding photos!
Hello Loves! We hope we can put a bit of light into your hearts this afternoon! Today, we welcome Naomi of Bowties & Bouquets to the blog as we go behind the scenes of Specialty Flatlay Styling. We recently put together a flatlay marathon and had such an amazing experience styling together. We are so happy that we can share some thoughts and tips from our experience.
A flat lay is essentially a compilation of items laid out on a flat or leveled surface and photographed from above. They tell a story, evoke emotion, and remind you of a memory.
Flatlays are so important to us because of the memories and feelings of nostalgia that they create. A flatlay isn’t merely just a photograph of your wedding items. Oftentimes, it contains details about your wedding day, it holds heirlooms passed down from generations, it has a special gift that you received from your partner. Yes, it does contain beautiful details from your wedding, but it is more than that. A flatlay encompasses all of the heirloom items and special wedding details that will fade or die — never to be seen or worn again.
For our Brides, the details that we love sharing consist of your beautiful wedding dress on a romantic hanger, beloved wedding shoes, that special ring he picked out just for you, a ring box, the gift of perfume & more. For our Grooms, we love to include cuff links, your watch a loved one gifted you, wedding shoes, socks, your necktie, and well-loved cologne. The special heirloom items we include are the jewelry your grandmother passed down to you, your handwritten vows, a love letter, your veil, any special details you may bring from past dates, your hand-selected wedding invitation & save the date.
It may feel like some of these items aren’t heirlooms and that’s because as of right now, maybe they aren’t. Maybe you just purchased them recently, well in 20 or 30 years when your children are looking through your photo albums, they absolutely will be heirlooms. These photographs are to preserve that memory, that feeling you get in your chest of love, that smile that starts to creep up on your face as you are reminded of the best day of your life, the day you pledged forever to your best friend.
We love to add loose florals from your wedding. Flowers always seem to dress anything up, so we like to photograph your luscious and beautiful bouquet, his gorgeous boutonniere, and any extra loose florals your florist sends along. Silk ribbons add a little bit of whimsy to the flatlay, we arrange it in a flowy way to add movement. Escort cards are a fun addition especially when they say “bride” and “groom” or “mr” and “Mrs” or it has your new last name, it’s always beautiful to see that up front and center. Having your beautiful sparkly encased in a velvet ring box just gives me all sorts of excitement and can we talk about seeing your rings together? We love that moment; it feels so official and it ties your union together. Laying your invitation out on a vintage tray or styling surface is the best! Sometimes invitations get thrown away so having this photographed and captured is the perfect remedy for that. You’ll never lose this keepsake when it’s inside a photograph.
One of our favorite features to include in a flat lay is a custom designed element that really tells your story. Often brides have sentimental items included in their wedding and we love to use those items to highlight your wedding and make your photos feel more personal.
We are a huge fan of silk ribbons from Ling’s Moments. They have so many different styles to choose from and their quality is superb, it will last you a lifetime!
You can work with your calligrapher or invitation designer to include bridal escort cards. Some of my favorite designs would be vellum, letterpress, wood, or acrylic. Different mediums can be fun too, like eucalyptus leaves, agate slices, seashells, marble, etc. Who are my favorite calligraphers? Honest Type, Lortz Lettering, Paper Mint Press, Written Word Calligraphy.
We have always been so obsessed with ring boxes. There are many options out there. You can choose velvet, acrylic, or wood. You can have a square, hexagon, or round ring box. It can be a single size (fits one ring) or double size (fits 2 rings). My favorite affordable ring boxes are from StylingArchives and Lacebyrd.
If you’re looking for antique items, you can rummage through your grandmother’s drawer to find heirloom items or you can head to a local antique store to find something that fits your fancy. We always love lockets with old-fashioned pictures of parents or grandparents.
Now this is for fellow photographers, creatives, designers/planners. We love using styling surfaces to get those pretty flatlays. Why do I use a styling surface? Not all venues will have a clean and bright space for you to lay all the items on. Sometimes you’re dealing with carpet or wood or uneven tones. A beautiful flatlay consists of having a bright, light surface. The surface must be large enough to lay all of your items on. My favorite styling surface to use is Chasing Stone. It is big enough to lay all of my items on, it rolls up for easy transportation, it is easy to clean in case you spill perfume or pollen and it comes with a bag so you can just throw it in your car.
And there you have it, guys! These are our tips for flatlays as well as where to get all of our favorite items! Thank you for joining us on this Wedding Wednesday!
with love from Sun & Sparrow & Bowties & Bouquets
