FROM THE BRIDE // I was actually surprised at how calm and aware I was. When I saw Robert for our first look, I thought it was so funny that he looked more nervous than me! I was super blessed to have a great wedding coordinator, my mom, my maid of honor and my bridesmaids (and bridesmen) who took care of me and made sure I had nothing to worry about. Robert and I loved that so many of our friends and family could be there, especially since a lot of them are from out of town. We can’t imagine a better day.

One thing that I remember best was our first dance. I absolutely loved that moment of pure bliss. All of the stress of the wedding had completely melted away and it was just us for that moment. I sigh just thinking about how special it was. Robert says that our first look did the same for him… But I beg to differ. 🙂

When considering my wedding day, I wanted all of my decor to have a whimsical and woodland feel. I’m from New Jersey originally, where there are lots and lots of trees. When I showed some Californians my hometown on Google Earth, they said, “you lived in a FOREST!!” I would have never called it that myself, but I guess that explains why I like trees! I guess that’s what I loved about this venue – all the greenery and the way it plays with the light. Robert and I also got to know each other in the beginning while hiking and biking in a lot of Orange County’s parks, so the park scene was very meaningful to us in that way.

If I could offer brides one bit of advice, I would love to offer one thing, definitely go with your gut, and stick with it. Don’t go on Pinterest late at night. And make sure you carve out time for just you and your new husband on the Big Day! We are so thankful for our first look and our private limo ride!

Sun & Sparrow is one of the leading engagement and wedding photographers in the Los Angeles area as well as Santa Barbara and Orange County.

Our wedding day came and went in a blink of an eye! I cherished those moments where time stood still and I could just breathe everything in and focus on just what our day was all about, Love. While getting ready for my day, I remember watching my mother get her hair and makeup done as I sat on my bed with one of my 13yr old dogs, petting her and listening to some Alicia keys was just the perfect start to my day! My heart just felt so overjoyed in that moment. Everything else was just a fast forward and pause kind of day. My favorite pause was our first look, my nerves were thru the roof and I knew as soon as I saw Edson I would not be able to control my emotions. Sure enough, one look at him and I just couldn’t hold back my tears, here in front of me was standing the love of my life moments before becoming my husband, it just felt so surreal! So many talks about getting married, to being engaged and then the crazy planning phase and the day was finally here! All my morning nerves were at ease after that, I felt so relaxed and ready to just enjoy our wedding day together and finally be married.

I’m a simple kind of girl! I love natural light and beautiful soft colors so from the get go I always knew I wanted a garden wedding. I didn’t want anything to take away from the natural beauty our venue had to offer. My amazing florist, Laura was the mastermind behind it all. She just knew exactly what made me happy and made my wedding a dream!

Brides to be, take it all in as much as you can! Do not worry about a single thing on the day of because something WILL go wrong or at least not how you planned and it’ll all be ok!

Enjoy it all as it comes and bask in all the love that surrounds you two. Truly treasure those moments alone with your husband because those come so little. People really weren’t kidding when they say your wedding day comes and goes, I am so glad I have all these beautiful images to help me relive such an amazing day in our lives.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE YOUR BEAUTIFUL DECOR?
Our decor was inspired by our wanting to pay tribute to our heritage, our family, and our love story. We wanted enough boutonnieres for each person in our family, but didn’t want to pay the exorbitant ship prices, so we made origami flowers instead! For the send off, we weren’t allowed to use anything that could disrupt the wildlife (meaning that rice, confetti, and bubbles were out of the question), so we went with the celtic tradition of wands with ribbon & bells. Making the flowers and wands was a great way to include our friends who weren’t able to join us for the cruise. The only feasible way we could think of to personalize our ceremony space was to customize our aisle runner. We were in love with the idea of having a timeline of our relationship through photos and quotes from our favorite songs, movies, and TV shows, so we incorporated all of it into our aisle runner. It was definitely worth all of the work we put into it!

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE MOMENT ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?
We both loved dressing up for each other. It was such a treat to see him in his kilt, and he absolutely loved my big dress!

WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?
We chose Sun and Sparrow for so many reasons! First of all, both of us are artists. We knew that we needed a photography team who would not only capture our story accurately, but would create pieces of art that we would never tire of. We don’t want to simply flip through our wedding photo album each anniversary, we want to cherish our wedding day through photographic art. Second, we wanted a team that was personable; we really wanted to get along with a team that was going to be following us around all day! Finally, we needed a team that was willing to travel since we ended up getting married in Alaska. Hands down, Sun & Sparrow is the team that meets all of these needs. My only regret was that we didn’t our day filmed by them as well!

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?
Don’t let anyone try to talk you out of what you and your fiancé want for your day! We loved every minute of it and had we tried to “make everyone happy” it wouldn’t have been as perfect as it was for us. We can’t imagine our wedding day being anything other than what it was.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?
Our favorite part of being married now is that we don’t have to correct people when they call us husband and wife! It simply feels right to call him my husband, and for him to call me his wife, as if this was the way it was always supposed to be.

Joel & Ariana // Rustic engagement in Yucaipa, CA

FROM THE BRIDE //  Nothing says opposites attract more than me and Joel. We actually met as silly, quirky pre-adolescents on a missions trip to Mexico with our church. He wanted to date me early on, but I said no because I wasn’t allowed to until I was 16! Joel had to wait a few years (poor guy), but this was good because we got to know each other as good friends. My feelings for him took time because I was raised in a family that took relationships and marriage very seriously. During high school, I was drawn to how Joel projected integrity and maturity to me and our peers. He was a strong believer in Christ like I was, and he was selfless in his serving towards others. I remember in 10th grade, there was this time of day when Joel and I would cross paths on the way to classes, where he would always stop to give me a hug. As days passed, I became more and more excited for his hugs. They were always what got me through that drooling hour of math class. Finally, when I was 16 1/2, Joel asked me to be his girlfriend on the way to a Sixth Flags church trip. We shared both of our first kisses with each other and have been dating ever since (6 years now!).

I love that in our relationship we complement each other’s differences. I am very enthusiastic, spontaneous, and outgoing, while Joel is very stoic, calm, and quiet. He has been my rock in my most stressful times, and I have been his joy in his most broken times. Though we have our differences, we know that what we share is our love for God. We are definitely competitive with each other, especially in sports and games. And we also love to go on walks, go to the movies, and play with my nieces and nephew. Joel has always been very patient in sharing me with my family and friends, and he has always encouraged me to pursue my own passions and dreams. I love how God has grown and molded our high school sweetheart relationship into something so beautiful and complementary.

FROM THE GROOM //  I met Ari on a bus ride to Mexico for a missions trip when we were 12 years old. As crazy as it sounds, I knew then and there that she was a girl that I wanted to pursue. It didn’t happen immediately, but 4 years later our lives and friendship had developed to the point that we were able to start our romantic relationship. We started dating in 2008 and I can honestly say that these past 6 years have been the best of my life, and that is in large part to the amazing girl I have been able to spend them with.

Ari is the most empathetic person I have ever met. It is probably the quality that made me really fall in love with her. She feels so strongly for other people, and she is an inspiration to me every day take others needs and feelings into account when I am living my life. I also love how willing she is to challenge me to grow in areas that I struggle in (usually having to do with social settings). I think that is a really special aspect of our relationship. We can challenge each other without ever fearing backlash. We trust each other and want to continually grow as a couple and as individuals. I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life growing with my best friend.

HOW HE ASKED //  My family had planned a big trip in June to my one of my favorite places in the world, Lake Powell. This was Joel’s second time coming on the trip. I wasn’t anticipating an engagement yet, thinking it would happen later in the year. I went ring shopping for fun a few months before with a mentor of mine, and I showed Joel a few pictures of rings I liked. Little did I know he would buy one of those rings weeks later. He kept my family in suspense, having asked my dad’s permission back in April, so whenever my family knew we were hanging out, they thought this was it, Ari’s engaged for sure. Of course, I was completely oblivious to all this, so I went to Lake Powell thinking it would be a fun trip spent with family and Joel.

So, on our second day at Lake Powell, Joel took me on a hike up Rock Creek Canyon. We got pretty far and decided to rest before we went back down the trail. We talked and enjoyed the beauty around us. It was a nice, peaceful moment. Then I asked Joel if we should head back down, to which he replied “Hold on, I have to go to the bathroom first.” (Very romantic right? Haha) So I’m waiting and he comes back from behind a boulder and says “Ari, I found a cool rock over there, I brought it over to show you.” And then I look down and notice a ring in his hand. It hit me, Joel’s proposing, right now, right here, that’s not a dirty, brown rock, it’s a diamond rock! And all I could say was “Joel what are you doing? What are you doing? What are you doing? JOEL” He then asked me if I would marry him and my first response was, “Did you ask my dad first?” After I got the confirmation, I said yes. And finally, after 5 ½ years, we are engaged! I am beyond excited to begin this new adventure together!
