FROM THE BRIDE //  Our wedding day can be described in only one word: magical. I remember feeling stressed the entire week over the possibility of rain, but when I woke up that morning I felt surprisingly calm.  The day went by seamlessly with the sun shining! Getting ready with the girls before the wedding was so much fun. We listened to music and danced up a storm (especially my mother). I surprisingly was hungry and able to eat a lot! Once Sun & Sparrow arrived however, things started to feel very real. I am normally the one in control at all times (disclaimer: I was a bridezilla) and the day of I let the reigns go because Ellie was able to execute my itinerary flawlessly. She got everyone moving and shaking! Before the ceremony, Chris and I had our first look which was very beautiful and private. We continued taking pictures with our family and friends at the beautiful Calamigos Ranch Oak Room and I was absolutely blown away by the enchanting arch that Petals & Linens executed. I was speechless at our floral arrangements! We hired a jazz band for the ceremony and cocktail hour which all of our guests really enjoyed under the gorgeous chandeliers of the outdoors area. After walking down the aisle, the party flew by. Dancing was one of my favorite parts, especially when my new husband decided to do the running man on the floor! It was a beautiful party to celebrate the beginning of a lifelong relationship and I couldn’t be more thankful for our supportive families and of course our amazing vendors!
One special moment that sticks out the most to me is the first look with my Dad. It was the only time I felt really emotional. I saw his eyes get watery and it just broke me. Also, his father of the bride speech was very genuine and from the heart. It was very special for my family.
If I could give one piece of advice to couples currently in the planning stages is to have a first look. The day goes by so fast and it was nice to have the pictures all taken care of prior to the ceremony. Plus your hair and makeup is perfect still. Also, do not download three different weather apps and stare at them all day long leading up to the wedding. It is what it is!
What inspired you while planning your wedding & decor? Was there any special element that made your decor come together for you, personally?
I have always loved the movie The Secret Garden since I was a little girl. I was very inspired by that movie and wanted to recreate it with a bright colored floral arch that looked like it grew from the ground and the waterfall backdrop.

Jack & Cindy // Southern California Coastal wedding at Casa Romantica

Southern California Coastal wedding at Casa Romantica // ©2017 Sun & Sparrow Casa Romantica Wedding photographer

Describe your experience at your wedding in 1 paragraph, everything you remember.

Jack: The first emotion I felt during our wedding was joy on a number of different levels – joy that I was about to marry the woman of my dreams, joy that all of our shared experiences were about to culminate in a wonderful celebration, and joy that all of our hard work preparing for the big day was over and that we could finally savor all the day’s special moments.  The instant I saw Cindy during our first look felt like an incredible rush that didn’t let up until we woke up the next morning. The rest of the day felt like living in a fantasy. Our ceremony overlooked the Pacific Ocean on a beautiful Fall day, we had an amazing dinner with 120 of our closest friends and family, and then we danced the night away inside of a beautiful hacienda ballroom.  I’m glad that we have pictures to prove that we weren’t dreaming!

Cindy: The moment my bridesmaids and I arrived to Casa Romantica I felt a surge of emotions that brought me to a high unlike any other – excitement, nerves, anticipation, delight, and so much love. I was incredibly grateful for all the hard work that our families and bridal party had put in to make this a special day, and for all of our guests that had traveled from near and far to be with us. Walking down the aisle with my father to meet Jack was the sweetest and most loving scene that we could have asked for. We read our vows in front of our closest friends and family, and in that moment I couldn’t believe how fortunate we were – not only did I get to marry a wonderful man that has brought so much happiness into my life, but we also managed to have the wedding of our dreams. The coastal views, the laughter and cheers echoing through the walls, the beautiful flowers and decorations, our wedding band playing our favorite songs, it all came together to make our wedding an incredible experience.

What was your favorite moment from your wedding day?

Out of all the amazing moments, our favorite would have to be  the ceremony itself.  The ceremony took place on the ocean terrace of Casa Romantica, which overlooks the San Clemente pier and the beautiful Pacific coast. The weather was warm and the skies were clear. At one point, our officiant asked us to look out on all of our friends and family in attendance, and the feeling of love and support emanating from all of our guests, coupled with the love and support we felt from each other, is something we will never forget. A close second would have to be dancing with all of our guests as we wrapped up the reception to our song, I’m Gonna Be (500 miles).

What inspired you while planning your wedding & decor?

No one really tells you how much work goes into planning a wedding, but with the help of our fantastic wedding coordinator extraordinaire, Cortney Helaine, we were able to make our wedding dreams a reality. We wanted to set the scene in a beautiful, romantic, and intimate spot, and Casa Romantica allowed us to do just that. A venue as lovely as Casa meant that we only needed to add a few personal touches to make it special. From the dark red dahlias to the San Francisco themes, we wanted to bring details that were closest to our heart. The fact that each component of the wedding had been carefully curated by us brought on a feeling of accomplishment, as well as a feeling that we were living in some sort of dream world that had been created in our imaginations.

Do you have any advice for brides/grooms who are currently planning their weddings?

So much time and effort goes into planning a wedding that it can be easy to become distracted and not be in the moment. Make sure you let yourself enjoy the big day! All of the planning and stressing will be worth it, as long as you remember to turn off that part of your brain come wedding day.

Robert & Mariel // Enchanted Calamigos Ranch wedding at the Pavillion

Enchanted Calamigos Ranch wedding at the Pavillion  // ©2018 Sun & Sparrow Malibu Wedding Photographers

FROM THE BRIDE //  We (I) spent almost a year of planning and preparation for a big, beautiful outdoor wedding in Malibu, California. We are very outdoorsy people and live in Florida where the chances of rain are likely everyday. To our dismay, we found out a couple days before that it was going to rain on the weekend of our wedding. We can’t tell you how sad we were, as all the rentals, preparation, and staff we hired for an outdoor wedding had to last minute be routed underneath a tent, which took away from the true beauty of the venue. However, we can’t even begin to describe the feeling we had when we had our first look outside Calamigos Guest Ranch. The whole morning was chaotic- from getting ready, photos, to coordinating my forever late to events family, but it wasn’t until the first look.. in the rain and in that moment with just each other, that it truly felt surreal. At that point, nothing else in the world mattered except us. We had our family members in our wedding party and we were overcome with the amount of support for our union. Everyone had flown from across the United States and even Canada to celebrate our special day. When we first walked into the Pavilion Tent where both the ceremony & reception were now going to take place, we were blown away at how our wedding planner really made our vision come into fruition in such a short amount of time! The florals blew me away. From there, we exchanged our personalized vows and we were Mr. & Mrs. Weber! Everything from the music, to dancing, and celebrating with everyone was perfect. We still can’t believe how fast the evening went by! We are just truly blessed with amazing friends and family that came all the way out for our wedding and are so thankful.

What was your favorite moment from your wedding day?  // Both Bobby and I each had a close grandparent on both our sides that passed away last year. Only 1 grandparent, Mimi (Bobby’s grandma), was able to be at our special day and seeing her so happy and having the time of her life on the dance floor meant a lot to us.

What inspired you while planning your wedding & decor? //  I personally really wanted a twilight movie-esq outdoor wedding with tons of lighting and florals, while still maintaining an intimate feeling. The florals on the chandeliers and the lighting inside the tent was able to capture that look.

Do you have any advice for brides/grooms who are currently planning their weddings?  //  I spent close to a year planning every single little detail about my dream wedding. I even hand made the wedding invitations. However, the truth is, don’t get caught up in all the details. Be prepared for things to not go as planned, because the day goes by SO fast. It’s all meet & greets from the moment you walk into the reception. So my biggest advice is to take a moment with your significant other to soak it all in — even if it’s just some alone time together on the side for 15 minutes, because after all, it’s not a big show meant to entertain everyone, it’s a special union that you only get to relish in with your significant other once. I think that’s our biggest takeaway <3

David & Frangelica // Garden fairytale wedding at the Belmond el Encanto in Santa Barbara

Garden inspired wedding at the Belmond el Encanto in Santa Barbara // ©2018 Sun & Sparrow Santa Barbara wedding photographers

FROM THE BRIDE // From the moment you step onto the Belmond El Encanto in Santa Barbara, you can feel its magic. The stunning ocean views to the bungalows set among the lush green grounds set the tone for a fairy tale setting. As we walked under the wisteria covered arbor surrounding the lily pond, our 12 year old pug dove in for a swim with the turtles. We knew right then and there that this was going to be the place where we would get married.

“The Secret Garden”, Fran’s favorite childhood book, provided the inspiration for our wedding theme.  Some details we loved included the antique key name tags placed upon moss covered tables, the roses that dangled from every chandelier, and the table numbers made from selected novels from Fran’s antique book collection.

Our favorite moment of the day occurred before the ceremony while we were alone and blissfully unaware that we were 30 minutes late to our own wedding.  We had found a baby grand piano situated within the quiet hallway beside the ballroom.  This is where we spent time sipping champagne and talking while Fran played the piano.  That moment was special as it gave us an opportunity to pause, appreciate the moment, and take everything in, advice that we would give to every bride and groom.

Our wedding was dream come true and we felt the love all around us.  It was the perfect day to mark the beginning of  our life together. Our secret garden wedding is perfectly summarized in the quote by Alfred Tennyson, which we displayed at the entrance of the lily pond. “If I had a flower for every time I thought of you, I could walk in my garden forever.”

Brady & Tiffany // Romantic Backyard wedding in Castaic

Romantic Backyard wedding in Castaic // ©2017 Sun & Sparrow Santa Barbara wedding photographers

We got married in Castaic, CA at a family friend’s beautiful home. Tucked in the hills of a very quiet and quint area…and honestly a place that I could have only imagined. We were so blessed to be gifted the use of this family’s home. The minute it was offered to us, I knew this was going to be the perfect location…..tons of greenery, a huge white rustic farm house, & a white barn to top it off! It was perfect….exactly what this Tennessee girl wanted! Because it wasn’t a typical wedding venue, there were lots of details & preparation that took place the 10 months leading up to the big day! I’m not sure how we did it, but it all came together beautifully with the help of our family. We of course had the typical small hiccups the day of (that everyone warned us about!). The weather was perfect all week and by our wedding day, it was going to be 98 degrees so we were a little nervous about that. It was a tinsy bit warm in the barn where we held the ceremony, but we were prepared. The ceremony was about 7 1/2 minutes (which was the game plan because we wanted to party!) so there was a little excessive sweating, but once the ceremony ended the sun was going down beyond the hill and the weather could not have been more perfect the rest of the night! Another little hiccup that day was that our 16 foot white chiffon draping in the barn decided to fall down an hour before the ceremony! Thank the Lord for the groomsmen and father of the groom — they were able to fix it with minor injuries (our poor coordinate took a good one to the head while trying to help, but she muscled through the night with no complaints!! She’s amazing!). And of course we (the groom & bride) knew nothing about this until after the ceremony….probably a good call there! lol.

I have so many favorite moments from the day — from waking up with my fiancé and blasting music throughout the house we rented (had to start the day off fun, it’s the only way we roll 🙂 to walking with my Dad down the aisle. One of the highlights was also having our family & friends together during a traditional Greek dance (my request as I’m from a Greek family). Dancing, & laughing with the people we love…it was such a special moment! Overall, it was such a gift to have all the people who matter the most in our lives together in one place — something that will probably never happen again. Truly a once in a lifetime celebration that we will always remember!
My advice to any future brides/grooms is to stick to your own vision for your big day (it’s all about you guys!) and have it represent who you are; enjoy every little challenge and special moment because the time leading up to the big day flies by; and once the day comes, just roll with it…laugh at the hiccups, be present in every moment, and remember what truly matters that day is the love you are celebrating together!
