Scott & Norma // Orange Empire Railway museum engagement in Redlands

how he asked-torrance wedding-photography

FROM THE GROOM:
Asking Norma’s parents for permission to marry their daughter was tricky business. Norma and her parents are extremely close. I was concerned that they might unintentionally let Norma know about my plan to propose if I first asked for their approval in advance of the actual proposal. I also wanted to ask for their approval in Spanish, a language I do not speak. Regardless, when Norma had to go out of town for a few days on a work trip, I knew opportunity was at hand.  //  With the help of a coworker, I had previously prepared a short statement in Spanish asking for Norma’s parents’ approval. I had that statement in my hand when I went to Norma’s parents’ house. When Norma’s Dad let me in, however, he informed me that Norma’s Mom was in the shower. I was so nervous that I could not wait ten minutes, and I blurted out my poorly spoken request in Spanish to Norma’s Dad.  His response – “Wait here for a few minutes.”
So for the next ten minutes, I sat watching the tv show “CSI” with Norma’s Dad while we waited for Norma’s Mom. It was a quiet ten minutes. When Norma’s Mom did join us, I repeated my statement (in English this time, just in case my Spanish version was gibberish), and they let me know that they approved of my intention to ask Norma to marry me.

FROM THE BRIDE:
Tradition is very important to my parents. Throughout my upbringing, they always discussed the importance of a suitor asking for a parental blessing before proposing to a daughter. Scott’s extra effort in making his request in Spanish further endeared himself to my parents, and confirmed what they already felt in their hearts: that Scott is the man I’m meant to marry. The weekend prior to Valentine’s Day, I traveled to Miami for a work conference. That weekend was a balancing act of work tasks, speaker panels, and fast-paced conference sessions. I called home at the end of each day excited to be experiencing a new city, but missing home and missing Scott. I spoke with my parents throughout the weekend, but at no point did they let on that Scott had paid them a visit and that he planned to propose. This is quite shocking – my mom and dad are not known for their ability to keep a secret.
I got home on a late Tuesday afternoon and was so exhausted that I fell asleep on our living room couch. Scott, who had to work late, came home that evening and woke me up with a kiss on the cheek. He said he had something really important to ask me. Half asleep, I sat up on the couch. Scott got on one knee. I rubbed my eyes, looked at his face, and noticed that he was unusually serious. He said, “You are my favorite person in the world. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” Scott then presented me with a small box. I opened the box to find a beautiful vintage art deco ring. Speechless, I clutched the ring, nodded my head in agreement, and hugged him. He asked me, “Is that a ‘Yes’?” I found my voice and enthusiastically said “Yes!”

He sat on the couch with me and we hugged for a long time. I had never seen him this nervous. He faced my flurry of questions with classic Scott Franklin patience: “Do my parents know?” “Do your parents know?” “How did you tell them?” “How long have you planned this?”  //  Scott had been planning that moment for some time. The ring belonged to his great-grandmother and has been in his family for almost a century. Before asking for my parents’ blessing, Scott asked a dear friend to translate into Spanish the words that he wanted to say to them. Scott took the time to work on his Spanish pronunciation. Scott’s proposal could not have been more thoughtful or more perfect. He gave me one of the first extraordinary memories in our new home, where we hope to continue the longstanding family traditions that we both grew up with, and create new traditions along the way.

Mike & Alicia // Calamigos Ranch wedding // Malibu Wedding Photographers

From the Bride…The Garden Pavilion at Calamigos Ranch, Malibu was the perfect backdrop for the vintage glamour theme I envisioned for the wedding. The ceremony was held under a 100 year old Oak tree with tiny white lights along its branches and the guests were seated in chairs on a sprawling lawn with white rose petals and shepherd’s hooks holding white flowers adorning the aisle. IZZE drinks in galvanized steel tubs with lavender and white paper straws greeted guests at the ceremony. I loved the lace that the calligrapher used on the invitations so much that it became the inspiration for many of the wedding’s key components – the DIY programs, menus, and donation sign had the same lace digitally printed on them, the cake’s frosting emulated the design, and the cocktail and dessert tables were swathed in a similar vintage-inspired floral lace. A string trio played The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony before guests made their way to the reception area, a short walk away.

Erick & Amber // Vintage inspired Cree Estate wedding // Palm Springs wedding photographer

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?  //  I have always wanted to be a princess, so that was always in mind. From there we took an English Garden meets the desert feel. I wanted sweet, soft, and fun.

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //

My favorite part of my wedding day was my first dance with my new husband. It was the first time we got to be together and enjoy being married.  Erick wanted to mention that he felt the most memorable moments were at our ceremony. Remembering such wonderful moments as I walked down the aisle to become his wife is something he will treasure for the rest of his life.

WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU & WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?  //  We wanted spunky, fun photography that would represent our personalities. We felt sun and sparrow had fun modern photos. They were also local(ish), young, fun, different. Colorful!!
DID YOU DO ANY DIY PROJECTS? IF SO, WHAT?  //  I made the programs, the favor boxes, the paper flowers, ran the bar specifically the cocktail was created by Erick.

WHAT WAS YOUR SOMETHING OLD, NEW, BORROWED, BLUE?  //   Something old was a turtle brooch that I wore in my hair that belonged to my Great Grandmother Louis. I also wear Erick’s Grandmother Betty’s engagement and wedding rings as my engagement ring.  //  Something new was my simulated diamond necklace and bracelet set.  //  Something borrowed was a pair of pink diamond drop earrings borrowed from Erick’s happily married Aunt Paige.  //  Something blue… MY SHOES!! Oh and a bow on my garter

Mary & Cole | Glamour in Palm Springs | Riviera Boutique Hotel, Palm Springs Wedding Photographers

• WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?     My theme was a combination of desert romance and Hollywood glam.

• WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?      The first look.

• WHAT MADE YOUR WEDDING “YOU”?    Our venue, The Riviera, really reflected our style. Our wedding party made the day so special, we have such amazing friends and family. One of my bridesmaids even carried our little Chihuahua during the ceremony which was adorable and meant a lot to us. Our friend Chris got ordained specifically to marry us which was special.  We also wrote our own vows in addition to the traditional ones.  I think those details made the wedding more personal.

• WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU & WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?   Photography was important to us because these pictures will be around for generations to come.  We wanted them to represent us in the best light and help savor the memory of our day.  We chose Sun & Sparrow because we liked their portfolio and style. Once we met Tiffani, we felt confident that she would do a good job.  She made the effort to get to know us in order to anticipate what we wanted to achieve. Her positive and outgoing personality made working with her easy.
• DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES TO BE?      My advice is to not leave the little details until the week before the wedding. Don’t try to be thrifty when it comes to veil, shoes, and accessories. Invest in a videographer. (We wish we had.)

• WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?    The best part about being married is knowing I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend.
