Tom & Stephanie // Garden Inspired wedding in Palos Verdes

Some of our favorite moments from the wedding reception were simply standing together as a newly married couple, looking out over the field and watching people we love, both kids and adults, talking, laughing, and playing.  We loved having so many people that we love (many that we don’t get to see often) together with us, celebrating and supporting us in entering into this next phase of our lives together.  We felt an overall sense of joy and celebration, which was what we wanted!  It was important to us that our guests could sense our personalities in the details of the wedding and we feel like that was accomplished. The wedding was in such a beautiful venue that we were able to keep the decorations pretty simple and open up the field to play in.  Our flowers were incredible.  They were centered around protea (the uniquely beautiful national flower of South Africa – where Steph used to live) and other brightly colored, alien-looking flowers that you couldn’t help but touch.

We had a lot of help from friends, family, and former students in putting things together and making the ceremony and reception happen.  This included hair and makeup, DJ-ing, live guitar playing before and during the ceremony, and even the creation of a Steph and Tom coloring book!  Not to mention, Tom and one of the groomsmen made the delicious beer!
We loved our coordinator, all of the venders, and especially our photographers! We would recommend all of them to anyone looking for lovely people who are easy to work with, organized, and do great work!

Anthony & Nikki // Whimsical Malibu wedding

FROM THE BRIDE // My vision started with wanting to get married under a Willow tree with twinkle lights and have a romantic feel. So I started my research for a venue with that as the determining factor. I used Pinterest as my research tool with a lot. Pinterest is so convenient and helped me gather pictures of what I wanted to create for my wedding board. My wedding venue was at Calamigos Ranch. This property is absolutely beautiful! It has a rustic feel to it but I think with my décor it gave a more romantic/whimsical feel. I also wanted to make sure everything was custom to Anthony and I and to include décor that was meaningful to us. The elements around us when we got married were important. I had a cross custom-made that held our unity candle, which represented having God at the center of us. The giveaways for the guests were little succulent plants that I handpicked and my bridal party helped pot each one. We pinned our engagement pictures to show our family and friends the romantic moments between Anthony and I. I was beyond excited to see everything come together so nicely.

My favorite moment was really marrying my best friend! Walking down the aisle seeing him, the set up and everyone joined together to watch us was truly a blessing. We flew in my Uncle Sam who is a pastor in Spain to marry us. It was important to have someone marry us that know us and can speak from the heart. All in all I loved my entire wedding. I enjoyed every bit of it from the beginning of the day all the way to the end. (I didn’t want it to end!) I couldn’t have been blessed with better vendors and wedding party.

Photography is important to us because it’s what captures important moments of our special day. Photos are always kept and looked at. They are always shared between family and friends. It takes a talented person to capture emotion and feelings within a picture. I was really particular about choosing a photographer. One of my friends used Sun & Sparrow for the wedding like 4 years ago and I always loved their pictures. So when I was on the hunt Sun & Sparrow was definitely in my top picks. Then I saw their website with all the other engagement/wedding photos and it was instant. I knew they were the one. Plus, when Tiffani and I first spoke we totally vibed and I loved her personality!

One thing that I think would have taken some ease off for me in the planning process was to attend a Bridal expo. I never did and I’m thankful that I pulled it off without going but I definitely think that it’s a great starting step. My favorite tool to use was The Knot app for the checklist feature. Every month it gave me my task to do.  Also, when going to other weddings really take a look at the vendors and their work/style. Some of my vendors I already had locked in because I loved their work from my best friend’s wedding. Make sure to also ask around with friends and family. It’s always nice to know of someone who used the vendors before or if they have tips on planning process. It’s a plus hearing other people’s wedding stories. The most important part really is keeping God in the center of it all. Prayer helps with everything and it’s amazing to see how God works in mysterious ways.

My favorite part of being married now is living together! We share our daily lives together now and for the rest of our lives. Making the house have both our personality and look to it.  It’s fun being couch potatoes together. I enjoy cooking and he enjoys my cooking..hahaha. It really is just all the little things that I love right now.

Heather & Rameen // Romantic Garden wedding in Santa Barbara

©2015 Sun & Sparrow Photography // Romantic Garden wedding in Santa Barbara

FROM THE BRIDE // From the beginning, my decor-planning philosophy has been to find a beautiful venue FIRST, and only after deciding on that, to start to think about the colors and centerpieces and whatnot. That way, we could avoid spending a ton of money simply trying to cover up what could be unique and beautiful venue features, just to fit with a predetermined color or theme decision. Rather, we decided to base our design around the existing details and feel of whichever location spoke to us. So right off the bat, Rameen and I began looking for a venue. We looked at everything from outdoor Spanish-style pavilions, to ballrooms, to wine cellars…. and pretty much everything in between. Once I found pictures of the Riviera Mansion online, however, I knew that we had found our wedding venue. The vintage furniture, gorgeous area rugs, and the hedged ceremony lawn all inspired me right off the bat. The mahogany-trimmed library really sealed the deal for me. As someone who feels most at home in a cozy room with a few books at hand, I could no longer imagine NOT having some wedding portraits done in such a beautiful library!
From that point on, all of our decor that we decided on– the brass candlesticks, the linens, the centerpieces, even our color scheme– was chosen in order to coordinate with and further enhance the glamorous, classic, and vintage aesthetic of the Mansion.

For me, the most memorable part of the evening was our first look. We put a lot of thought into whether or not we wanted to do a first look– as opposed to seeing eachother for the first time as I walked down the aisle. Ultimately, we decided that we would prefer to keep that moment a private experience, and I am SO glad that we did! After all of the morning hustle and bustle (getting my makeup on, hair done, bridesmaids ready to go, dress buttoned, etc etc), it seemed all the more special to have just a couple of minutes that were completely relaxed and personal.

Photography was near the top of the list in terms of priorities for Rameen and I. After all, we are only getting married one time in our lives– and there can be no do-overs or second-chances to catch special moments!
We wanted to choose a team that we trusted 110%, and that we were completely comfortable with as people. Sun and Sparrow fit that bill and then some! Ellie and Tiffani were not only great photographers, but were so incredibly helpful every step of the way, all the way from engagement to the day itself. From scheduling recommendations to fixing my hair to buttoning and bustling my dress, I really saw that they cared about Rameen and I having a special, beautiful, and stress-free day just as much as they did about providing us with gorgeous images. And that really meant everything to us.

The most beneficial thing to keep in mind, in my opinion, is that if you have hired vendors to make your wedding day beautiful, you should trust them to do just that! Rameen and I spent a LOT of time in the beginning stages of planning researching vendors who fit with our vision and our approach. We were VERY selective about who we chose, and really delved into portfolios of previous work, previous clients’ recommendations and reviews, and any provided proposals. Honestly, about 60% of the time we spent on the wedding was doing this start-up research.
However, all of that selectiveness meant that once we finally decided on someone whom we trusted for each aspect (flowers, cake, photography, etc), we could relax and just let the vendor do his/her thing. In my experience, if you hire professionals who share your vision, and then just give them the space and freedom to do what they do best, things will not only turn out beautiful, but everything will be a lot less stressful for you along the way!

My favorite part of being married is how comfortable it already feels to refer to eachother as “husband” and “wife.” I think I speak for both of us when I say that it is really amazing to settle comfortably into a more quiet sense of being and belonging together– past all of the wedding-planning craziness.

Thomas & Jennifer // Calamigos Ranch engagement photographer

          FROM THE BRIDE  //

Thomas and I started off as roommates. The first day we met, there was a great level of comfort that we both instantly felt; as if we had already known each other for years. During the first year of us living together, we got to know one another very well; each other’s routines, interests, likes, dislikes, and of course, bad habits. There was definitely a strong and genuine friendship that had developed. At that time, it was nothing more; I was dating someone else and Thomas was beyond content with the bachelor-life.

It was at the tail-end of our first year of living together that things took a turn. One night, after coming home from Christmas shopping, Thomas asked if we could talk. He looked nervous; as his arms were crossed, his hands started to shake. I was a bit concerned. It was then that he asked me the one question that I never thought he would ask; “How would you feel about going on a date with me?” It was completely unexpected. It took me a little while to realize what had just happened. I eventually came to find out that Thomas discovered his feelings towards me during a boy’s surfing trip to Costa Rica. “I was thinking of you and I missed you,” he said. (Admittedly– there was always a part of me that would think about our compatibility.) Three years later (December 2014), he proposed on Christmas day; just around the time that he first asked me out on a first date. As anyone would imagine, it was a Christmas that I will always cherish.
