Roberto & Alyson // Dreamy forest engagement in Los Angeles

FROM THE BRIDE // Roberto and I met a little over 2 years ago while doing a service year in AmeriCorps and have been inseparable ever since! We had talked about getting married so I knew an engagement was coming I just didn’t know when. I already knew it was going to be the best day ever because we were going to see my absolute favorite band (Johnnyswim) which I had been looking forward to for months!! Little did I know Roberto had also been planning a proposal the whole time. He asked me to meet him a little bit early so that we could “go to dinner” but when I met him at the venue, he surprised me by saying that we were actually going to be able to meet the band! So we go in to meet the band and they are rehearsing songs for the show. After a couple songs they start to sing one of my favorite songs (Summertime Romance) and the lights go down and pretty twinkly lights come on. Midway through the song Roberto got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! Afterwards the band came to talk to us and signed one of their records for us. It was the most surreal experience! I’m really looking forward to marrying my best friend and I can’t wait for all of our family and friends to come together for the wedding.

Now with just 4 months until we say “I do”, I can’t wait to spend this intimate day with our closest friends and family who’ve stuck by and supported both Mike and I for the 8.5 years we’ve been together. The funny thing is, from all the years I’ve been with him, I’ve never seen mike shed a tear. When people ask what I’m most excited about, I simply reply, “to see Mike cry” 🙂

Miles & Rini // Garden inspired wedding at the Hacienda in Santa Ana

When the time came for us to start planning our wedding, we knew that we wanted our décor to be soft and romantic. Slowly but surely, the little things began to come together. Like many couples, we embraced DIY projects and had a blast with them. We built, painted, drew, hand wrote, and designed as much as we possibly could. Not only is DIYing an obvious money-saver, but it allowed us to have a customized wedding day that was unique to our personal style as a couple. That was really our goal from the start, and when we walked into the venue on the big day, we knew we nailed it. Seeing your vision come together is such an amazing feeling, and we were so pleased with all the small details!
But there is no greater feeling than marrying the person that you love. During our ceremony, it truly felt as if we were the only people in the world. Staring into each other’s eyes and sharing our vows was surreal and overwhelming. We rubbed each other’s hands and smiled proudly the entire time. It rained all morning, and it was very humid all evening. We quickly got off schedule, and our champagne coupes broke and never made it onto our table. The father-of-the-groom had a huge cut on his head, and the bottom of my dress got dirty and ripped. The cake was served too late, and one of our flower girls jumped into a huge puddle. So many things did not go the way that we had planned. And yet, none of it mattered. Everything melted away except for the two of us. It may not have been the perfect day that we expected, but it was certainly perfect for us.
Future brides—don’t sweat the small stuff. You’re getting married, and a few hiccups in your day couldn’t possibly ruin the beauty of that. Just grab your groom’s hand and look at his smile. Everything else is just a bonus.

Mike & Angelica // Romantic Hurst Ranch Wedding

©2015 Sun & Sparrow // Romantic Hurst Ranch Wedding

FROM THE GROOM  //  From the start, Angelica and I both shared a love for traveling. We had the opportunity to visit Taiwan during the first year of our relationship and since then have traveled together often. So when it came time to select a wedding theme, we both agreed that incorporating travel was a must. We also wanted every other aspect of the wedding to be representative of who we are and of what we love. Ultimately we planned a wedding that incorporated travel, pugs, and basketball.

When we began to look for venues we decided that we didn’t want an elegant sit-down dinner at a banquet hall and despite knowing that we would end up with 200+ guests, we wanted a venue that felt homey, welcoming, and intimate. Hurst Ranch fit the bill perfectly because it was simple and Bashful Butler, its sole caterer, offered a BBQ buffet menu that would make our wedding feel more like a backyard BBQ with family and friends.
Although we decided on the venue first, photography was the most important piece for us. It would capture the amazing memories from our wedding day and allow us to relive every moment for many years to come. We spoke to a few photographers, but after seeing Sun & Sparrow’s portfolio and meeting Tiffani for the first time, we knew that they were the ones we wanted to share our day with. Tiffani was caring, thoughtful, and genuine in our meetings. Also, as proven by our experience with them on our engagement shoot, she and Ellie were creative and great at coming up with shots that showcased our personalities and captured our emotions. Ellie and Tiffani were more than just our photographers, they helped with many aspects of our wedding and on many occasions brought up things that we never considered. We even found our DJ and Angelica’s hair and makeup stylist through them. We can’t thank them enough for all the amazing work they did.
For me, the most memorable moment about our wedding day was seeing Angelica walk down the aisle. It was the first time I saw her since the night before the wedding and more importantly it was the first time I saw her in her wedding dress. She truly looked like an angel and I knew that I was the luckiest man in the world.
My favorite part about being married now is that I get to call Angelica my wife. It just feels so right and it continues to make me smile every time I say it. I also think that I can speak for the both of us when I say that it’s amazing to have our weekends back. Too bad basketball season is over. Still, it is great to be able to go to the beach and go hiking on weekends with our pug Baron. We also have more time now to plan our next trip, our honeymoon in Maldives.
