ELEVATE YOUR MATERNITY, NEWBORN, ENGAGEMENT, AND WEDDING WITH FLORALS

los angeles engagement photographer 0152

Everyone knows that flowers are a MUST HAVE for any wedding day. But have you considered that one of the reasons that weddings are so beautiful are because of the soft and flowing nature of flowers. We want to share some of the ways that we love to elevate our sessions and weddings with flowers! We believe that flowers really add to and elevate all types of sessions! For any engagement sessions, maternity sessions, boudoir, newborns and for all of our sessions, we absolutely and always recommend flowers!

Below, I have included some awesome examples of how flowers can elevate your sessions.

1. Bouquets & garlands & wreaths – I always recommend at least a bouquet for any bride at their engagement session or wedding. Often times it’s easy to think, maybe some with and some without, but I always think that flowers bring that extra glamour!

2. Loose flowers – One way to elevate your session is incorporating loose flowers all around. You can place them in your hair style or even around in your props, picnic, or on your table scape. One of my FAVORITE THINGS to do with lose flowers is to toss them in the air with bridesmaids. Not only is a flower toss super fun, it brings in extra smiles and wonder into any photo.

3. Flower crowns – I don’t think we have to mention how amazing flower crowns are! Flowers in your hair is always so heavenly. A flower crown is like a beautiful halo that makes any bride or flower girl look angelic and beautiful.

4. Flowers or foliage in nature – One thing that is a little more challenging to accomplish, but so beautiful if you can find the right spots to incorporate flowers or foliage in nature. All of our Sun & Sparrow photographers, including associates just love foliage in nature. We are always looking for leaves or natural flowers to place our couples into. There is something magical and romantic about natural vines that grow on walls or trees that have hanging leaves that makes our hearts sing.

A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

los angeles engagement photographer 0151

In our experience, a little goes a long way. Whether you have a huge floral budget or a minimalistic budget, there are always creative ways to incorporate flowers into your sessions. Ask your photographers if they have ideas or suggestions as to how to bring flowers into your session. Sun & Sparrow does actually have small session options for florals. Tiffani loves to design wreaths and bouquets for new moms and brides-to-be.

Another option is to make a bouquet yourself. Pinterest has many options to create your own wreaths and bouquets. I often recommend bringing a few flowers from your garden or even from your local grocery store that can be incorporated into your session. A little bit goes a long way.

You can see our pinterest board for making your own bouquets HERE.

FINDING THE PERFECT FLORIST

Just like finding the right photographer, finding the right florist will make your wedding day that much more special. We always recommend interviewing florists and reviewing their portfolios, just as you would a photographer. Make sure you connect with the person you will be working with and make sure that you love them. Everyone’s dream is to work with your “dream team” at your session or wedding. When choosing your florist, make sure that their vision matches you vision for your big day. Lastly, make sure that you have fun!

Every session should be fun and creative. When working with creatives, remember that they love collaborating to make your story that much more special! Let us know if you want to help bring your session to life with florals or creative fabrics, ribbons, or textures.

We are so excited about all of your upcoming sessions! Thank you for reading and thank you for being a part of our hearts!

Some of our favorite moments from the wedding reception were simply standing together as a newly married couple, looking out over the field and watching people we love, both kids and adults, talking, laughing, and playing.  We loved having so many people that we love (many that we don’t get to see often) together with us, celebrating and supporting us in entering into this next phase of our lives together.  We felt an overall sense of joy and celebration, which was what we wanted!  It was important to us that our guests could sense our personalities in the details of the wedding and we feel like that was accomplished. The wedding was in such a beautiful venue that we were able to keep the decorations pretty simple and open up the field to play in.  Our flowers were incredible.  They were centered around protea (the uniquely beautiful national flower of South Africa – where Steph used to live) and other brightly colored, alien-looking flowers that you couldn’t help but touch.

We had a lot of help from friends, family, and former students in putting things together and making the ceremony and reception happen.  This included hair and makeup, DJ-ing, live guitar playing before and during the ceremony, and even the creation of a Steph and Tom coloring book!  Not to mention, Tom and one of the groomsmen made the delicious beer!
We loved our coordinator, all of the venders, and especially our photographers! We would recommend all of them to anyone looking for lovely people who are easy to work with, organized, and do great work!

FROM THE BRIDE // Quan and I first met 5800 miles away from home in South Korea. We were both there for a summer study abroad program that lasted 8 weeks. Funny enough, it wasn’t until the last week of the program when we finally started hanging out. That was 6 years ago and we’ve been inseparable since.

One day, Quan sent me an email at work and told me to solve the riddle within. I didn’t think anything of it as he is really into mind games. After failing to resolve the riddle, I gave up without much thought. Fast forward to a week later and Quan wanted to cook us dinner after work. I got off of work two hours earlier than anticipated and he was just getting home with a bags of groceries as I was pulling up the driveway. He whipped up dinner and after a great meal, he pulled the box out of his pocket and asked me to marry him. I’ve never him so shy and nervous in our entire relationship! I said “YES, of course!” and here we are today. It wasn’t until a few weeks later when he confessed that the riddle was his first attempt!

Nigel & Kethia // Fairytale engagement // San Pedro wedding photographers

Nigel and I had a crush on each other from the first day we met (through my best friend, his sister). As time passed, we became close and started dating in February. On October 1st 2013, Nigel asked me if I wanted to go back to this French restaurant called Les Noces Du Figaro in Downtown L.A. Les Noces is one of my favorite restaurants! I love it, first because the food is amazing and secondly because the interior design & decor is spectacular.

Nigel had set up a really beautiful night. We both got dressed up and he picked me up at my place. He said he wanted to give me this “gift” before going out to dinner. When he came to my door, he gave me a small notebook. I looked at the plain gift for a while, thumbing through the pages, and then I opened the book. There, on the page I had opened to was a  drawing. I could tell that Nigel had been working on for a long time. There was so much detail, shading, and beautiful linework. After looking at the beautiful drawing I remembered that we had taken a picture together during Easter. It was a very special day for me because it was the day when I decided to follow Christ. I started to tear up because I knew how much time and effort he had spent on this gift.

As the night went on, I remember being mesmerized by the evening. The night was like a dream, flowing from moment to moment as if we were dancing. Evening dinner was, as expected, amazing. We had two appetizers, two entrees, a dessert, macaroons and coffee. Towards the end of our evening, Nigel asked me if we could take a few pictures on top of the balcony. I thought it was a great idea since this night had been so beautiful.  As we approached the top of the stairs, our server started to take pictures from my phone. As I was getting ready to smile and pose for the camera, Nigel took my hands and tried to say something sweet quietly in my ear.  I thought to myself, “He’s having one of his loving and sweet talking moments.” But I didn’t want to make the server wait for us, so I pulled him toward me to take the picture. Nigel couldn’t wait any longer. He came close to my ear and said how much he loved me and why he wanted to marry me. I was a little confused, but suddenly, he went down on one knee. We were both nervous and excited. Both of our hands were shaking when he told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I said: “OH MY GOSH, you’re doing it now!”   With LOTS of tears of joy, I said YES!!!

Everybody in the restaurant clapped and shouted “Congrats!”  My ring was beautiful. I couldn’t and still can’t take my eyes off of it. I feel like a girlie girl. I am so grateful that our server spent a few extra moments with us. He was able to capture everything with my iPhone video app. After a beautiful night of dinner and wonder, I kept reliving it over and over in my mind. Later in the evening, I wanted to remember the beautiful drawing that Nigel had created for me. As I turned to the drawing, I noticed one extra detail. Nigel had drawn an engagement ring on my left hand! If I would have been more observant, I could have known the whole time. Everything was perfect! Everything was how it was supposed to be all along!  I became his life and he became my everything.

      Thus, a fairytale engagement begins…

Tyler & Shanna // Walnut Grove rustic ranch wedding // Tierra Rejada Ranch, CA

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?  //  We both wanted our wedding to display our love for each other and for music. Tyler is a DJ, and I play guitar. It was only natural and very us. The look I was going for was boho-chic and a little glam, yet simple and rustic. Music-inspired.

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //  The most memorable for me was walking down the aisle and seeing Tyler waiting for me. During the planning process, you can kind of envision what that feeling would be like, but not truly comprehend the type of emotion that will overcome you. For me, it felt like a dream–I remember walking with my parents and hearing our guitarist and violinist play “Let It Be” by The Beatles. I just started crying then. Reality hit me and it was real.

WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU?  //  We knew that having beautiful photos would allow us to remember and reminisce about all the special moments during our big day for years to come. Also, since we were so busy the day of–it was crucial that we had photographers who were able to capture every little detail we may have missed.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?  //  We found S&S on TheKnot.com, loved their vintage-esque outdoorsy shots, and booked right away after speaking w/ Tiff. We loved that they were open to our crazy vinyl record store engagement idea. I just thought S&S had a great way of capturing photos w/ personality… And their outdoor shots were amazing!

DID YOU DO ANY DIY PROJECTS? IF SO, WHAT?  //  We did many, here’s a few:

Invitations– I designed them myself from Photoshop and had them printed from VistaPrint.com. We wanted something simple and chic. We also assembled them ourselves, twine with music sheet and everything.   //  Programs– We did program fans and they were so easy to DIY! Just print, slab the two pieces together w/ double stick tape with a popsicle stick and that was it.  //  Favors– Since Tyler’s a DJ and our theme was love and music, we made our own 45 record vinyl inspired love mixtape for all our family and friends to take home & listen to. The fun part is we actually talked over it and hosted it, lol.  //  Directional Post and Signs- So fun, cheap, and easy to do! It helped guide our guests at the venue.  //  Window Pane Seating Arrangements- Found fairly cheap ones off Craigslist ($5/pop!), cleaned them up, added the rounded hooks and ropes, and wa-lah! We also printed the chart ourselves and stuck them on with spray adhesive. They were great decor at the venue.  //  Other DIYs: “Uncle Tyler, here comes the bride!” sign for coin bearer, flower girl baskets, ring bearer box, table numbers, and dessert bar (provided by our very special bridesmaid, Jellie).  //  Ivory Lace Overlays- My MOH/sister cut all the yards of fabric we bought at the LA Fashion District into overlays! We ended up saving lots of $ and our tables looked so chic.

WHAT WAS YOUR SOMETHING OLD, NEW, BORROWED, BLUE?  //  My “something old and borrowed” was a one of my mom’s vintage gold/pearl earrings that broke. We then “reworked” it by having my sister sew it onto my “something blue” garter as an accessory.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?  //  Start early, relax, take it easy. There will be a lot of challenges along the way, but trust your vision. Ask for help from family and friends. Lastly, enjoy your special day, because it goes by SO FAST! Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember it’s about you and your man.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //  Being able to come home to my best friend. Knowing that we’re in it together.
