Describe your experience at your wedding in 1 paragraph, everything you remember.

Our wedding day was filled with joy and love. Everyone came together to celebrate our union in marriage and it couldn’t have been more beautiful and perfect. We both have lived through a lot and waited a long time to find each other and when we did, we knew that our lives would change forever. What made our wedding day especially wonderful was to be surrounded by the love and energy of all of our friends and family. The tone was infectious—it really didn’t even matter where we were, what the decor or dress looked like or the fact it was extremely hot and humid…people had smiles on their faces. laughter was in the air and love abounded. St Bedes Catholic church was a powerful and serene place to exchange our vows and surrounded us with the holy spirit in all its grandeur. The Athenaeum, where we celebrated our reception on the campus of Cal Tech, could not have been more beautiful with its luscious grounds and architectural details. The settings were both perfect and special in their own way and a reflection of each other and our marriage. We couldn’t have asked for a more incredible day!

What was your favorite moment from your wedding day? Did you have any special moments/story with friends or family that stand out to you?

Our favorite moment from our wedding day was listening to the Ave Maria as we walked over to give flowers to Mary at the church and say our first prayers together as husband and wife. Our most special moment was when our daughter Talie (who was also one of our maids of honor) gave the most eloquent and meaningful, heartwarming speech and toast to us at the reception.

What inspired you while planning your wedding & decor? Was there any special element that made your decor come together for you, personally?

We were inspired to create a timeless and classic feel to our wedding and decor that would reflect our taste and personal style. Having the reception at the Athenaeum with it’s beautiful architecture and history was the special element that really brought everything together.

Do you have any advice for brides/grooms who are currently planning their weddings?

Don’t overthink every detail or feel pressure to go over the top. Stay true to yourself and what feels right to you as a couple. This day is about coming together in marriage–not the production of a wedding.

Steven & Stephanie // Anthropologie inspired San Ysidro Ranch wedding

how she did it

FROM THE BRIDE //
We decided to have a small wedding because we wanted to be surrounded by those people who knew us the best. We strived to make our wedding feel warm and intimate, as if it were a simple family gathering. We held the ceremony very close to our hearts and wanted our closest and biggest supporters with us as we committed our lives to each other.
Luckily, our experience was just as we hoped. We were able to enjoy a family style dinner, meaning all 21 of us sat around one large table, and devoured each course together as one unit. No sweetheart table, no toasts, no running around trying to say hello to everyone while we grabbed a bite here and there. It was blissful. But wait, there is more, to finish the night off, we all sat around roasting s’mores (the groom’s favorite treat), telling stories, and sharing laughter. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?  //  Initially, we wanted to elope to Tuscany. However, the thought of having our big day without our loved ones just did not feel right to us. With this, we looked within California to find a place that evoked the same sense and romance that Italy seemed to provide. The San Ysidro Ranch had so many elements that made us melt into puddles of awe. From the lavender to the rustic feel of the wine cellar and patio, we knew from the second we arrived that this was our place.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //   Without a doubt, our favorite moment was the private moment that we shared immediately after the ceremony. The groom and I made our way away from the ceremony area and for the first time, we’re alone as husband and wife. We both took one look at each other and burst into tears. We were both so overcome with emotion and dumbstruck by the beauty of what had just occurred.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?  //  Just keep in mind what the day truly is about. It should be the most beautiful day of your lives together as a couple. You are there to make the ultimate commitment to each other. When it all boils down, the day is so much more than a wedding. I would also say to remember that there are no rules! We did everything exactly as we felt. No DJ, no dancing, no cake- but we continue to receive compliments that it was the most beautiful wedding our guests have ever attended.
Also, etsy and Pinterest are your best friend!!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //   Being able to really plan our future together. We continue to do and enjoy all that we did before but now with the feeling that we forever have a partner to experience all of life’s moments with. It is something we both truly cherish.

PLEASE COMMENT & SHARE THIS WEDDING! Tell Steven & Stephanie how much you love them & congratulate them on their beautiful wedding day!

Raphael & Michelle // Glamorous wedding at Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica

how she did it

FROM THE BRIDE //  When I began planning my wedding, I knew the colors I wanted and I knew that I wanted to add a romantic touch. We didn’t necessarily have a theme, but I wanted our wedding to have a hollywood glam feel.  I feel like we were able to achieve the look and create the most amazing memories from our day. When I look back on my wedding day, there are so many moments that I want to remember forever! One of my most memorable moments is getting married in our local parish St. Monica. St. Monica is such a special place for Raphael and I, since we have been attending mass there for many years. We actually knew we wanted to get married there the first time we attended mass at the church. We had family and friends travel from all over the world to witness our vows and that was very meaningful to us. It was just the most magical day, being able to say our vows in front of all our family and friends was special too.

One of my most memorable moments was seeing all of our business fraternity brothers from USC back together again for our wedding. We have a running inside joke with our friend Sean that has lasted for 5 years now…he surprised us with real doves to release at our wedding (don’t worry they are trained to come back to the dove keeper 😛 ) . It was so special for us to know that our friends still value our friendship after all these years.

If I could give advice to any brides who are planning their wedding, I would recommend to make time for all the wonderful things that you want from your wedding. I fortunately had time to plan our wedding for a year. I definitely made a checklist of all of my “must-haves” and attacked one item at a time. One of the biggest items on my list was to find a wedding planner who was AWESOME and who could help tremendously with our planning. I would highly recommend finding a wedding planner who understands your vision and can help you execute your wedding. Photography was the second most important item on my list. It was extremely important to me because I knew our day would be filled with so many emotions. I wanted to make sure we were able to capture everything. I chose Sun & Sparrow because I instantly fell in love with their work and how they tell beautiful stories through their photography. All of their pictures are gorgeous!

Also, don’t be afraid to lean on your maid/matron of honor, or bridesmaids for some help. I am lucky enough to have wonderful women in my life and whenever I felt like I wasn’t sure, or needed an opinion I would reach out to these ladies. Your wedding will be close to being perfect, and things will happen on the day of that maybe aren’t intentionally planned…don’t fret or let it cloud over your amazing day.

Last, I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to be married! I absolutely love when Raphael & I get to call each other husband and wife 🙂 We were together for 5 years prior to getting married, but now we truly feel like we are one family now. Also, our families coming together is great. We are both close to our families and having them together is an amazing experience. The thought of expanding our own family in the future is also another wonderful feeling.

Juebong & Deborah // Urban Vintage wedding photographer

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?
We wanted something relaxed and lovely to enjoy so we went with an overall aesthetic of industrial whimsy with the textured brick, vintage table decor, and mixed citrus garden florals. We strayed from a uniformed look and leaned towards an organic, natural feel for the space and the day. We wanted everyone involved to have a laid-back but memorable experience and of course a great time.

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?
The ceremony was unrehearsed and raw, and to me that enhanced its sincerity. I was originally hesitant to be so open and vulnerable in front of a crowd, but I am so glad my partner and I shared our love and commitment with our community. I am yet to experience something as incredible.
WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU?
We wanted to capture the experience and add beautiful images to our memory of the celebration. We will share the photos with our guests and token individuals who could not celebrate with us. It was a wonderful day, and this is a great way to revisit it.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?
Immediately we noticed that Sun and Sparrow had the relaxed and intimate look we were hoping for when capturing the event, loved ones, and precious moments. Tiffani and Elli were wonderful to connect and work with, and their duo with videographers Winston and Aaron Tao made the perfect team.

DID YOU DO ANY DIY PROJECTS? IF SO, WHAT? (FEEL FREE TO INCLUDE YOUR PINTEREST BOARD LINKS)
We created our own hand fasting cord for the ceremony out of seven different ribbon fabrics, we assembled our guest favors, and our sister created the vintage guest sign-in wreath.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?
Relax! Take it easy! Work equally with your partner! Enjoy the preparation process as much as possible, and work with talented vendors who will listen to your goals and warrant your trust. You should be a “guest” at your union, and it is okay to cry. There will be cameras and large groups of people, but be yourself and truly do what you need to cherish the day.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?
Nothing is different for us, but that was the goal! We organically transitioned to this stage of our relationship, and are happy to be back home with our puppy!
From the photographers: Thank you for letting us be part of your urban vintage wedding!
