Marc & Elaine // Secret Santa Barbara Elopement

Secret Santa Barbara Elopement // ©2017 Sun & Sparrow Santa Barbara wedding photographers

My favorite moments from our elopement: Marc carrying me down the stairs that ended mid-air to the secret beach. Climbing rocks barefoot while carrying layers and layers of fabric (a.k.a my dress) in my arms. Watching our two families join and meet (including Koda, my sister’s dog!). We loved the personal experience of our private ceremony!

Garden Inspired wedding in Palos Verdes // ©2016 Sun & Sparrow South Coast Botanical Garden wedding photographer

Sun & Sparrow is one of the leading engagement and wedding photographers in the Los Angeles area as well as Santa Barbara and Orange County.

Some of our favorite moments from the wedding reception were simply standing together as a newly married couple, looking out over the field and watching people we love, both kids and adults, talking, laughing, and playing.  We loved having so many people that we love (many that we don’t get to see often) together with us, celebrating and supporting us in entering into this next phase of our lives together.  We felt an overall sense of joy and celebration, which was what we wanted!  It was important to us that our guests could sense our personalities in the details of the wedding and we feel like that was accomplished. The wedding was in such a beautiful venue that we were able to keep the decorations pretty simple and open up the field to play in.  Our flowers were incredible.  They were centered around protea (the uniquely beautiful national flower of South Africa – where Steph used to live) and other brightly colored, alien-looking flowers that you couldn’t help but touch.

We had a lot of help from friends, family, and former students in putting things together and making the ceremony and reception happen.  This included hair and makeup, DJ-ing, live guitar playing before and during the ceremony, and even the creation of a Steph and Tom coloring book!  Not to mention, Tom and one of the groomsmen made the delicious beer!
We loved our coordinator, all of the venders, and especially our photographers! We would recommend all of them to anyone looking for lovely people who are easy to work with, organized, and do great work!

how she did it

FROM THE BRIDE //
We decided to have a small wedding because we wanted to be surrounded by those people who knew us the best. We strived to make our wedding feel warm and intimate, as if it were a simple family gathering. We held the ceremony very close to our hearts and wanted our closest and biggest supporters with us as we committed our lives to each other.
Luckily, our experience was just as we hoped. We were able to enjoy a family style dinner, meaning all 21 of us sat around one large table, and devoured each course together as one unit. No sweetheart table, no toasts, no running around trying to say hello to everyone while we grabbed a bite here and there. It was blissful. But wait, there is more, to finish the night off, we all sat around roasting s’mores (the groom’s favorite treat), telling stories, and sharing laughter. We couldn’t have asked for a better day.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING?  //  Initially, we wanted to elope to Tuscany. However, the thought of having our big day without our loved ones just did not feel right to us. With this, we looked within California to find a place that evoked the same sense and romance that Italy seemed to provide. The San Ysidro Ranch had so many elements that made us melt into puddles of awe. From the lavender to the rustic feel of the wine cellar and patio, we knew from the second we arrived that this was our place.
WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //   Without a doubt, our favorite moment was the private moment that we shared immediately after the ceremony. The groom and I made our way away from the ceremony area and for the first time, we’re alone as husband and wife. We both took one look at each other and burst into tears. We were both so overcome with emotion and dumbstruck by the beauty of what had just occurred.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR BRIDES WHO ARE CURRENTLY IN THE PLANNING PROCESS?  //  Just keep in mind what the day truly is about. It should be the most beautiful day of your lives together as a couple. You are there to make the ultimate commitment to each other. When it all boils down, the day is so much more than a wedding. I would also say to remember that there are no rules! We did everything exactly as we felt. No DJ, no dancing, no cake- but we continue to receive compliments that it was the most beautiful wedding our guests have ever attended.
Also, etsy and Pinterest are your best friend!!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //   Being able to really plan our future together. We continue to do and enjoy all that we did before but now with the feeling that we forever have a partner to experience all of life’s moments with. It is something we both truly cherish.

PLEASE COMMENT & SHARE THIS WEDDING! Tell Steven & Stephanie how much you love them & congratulate them on their beautiful wedding day!

Dan & Tiffani // Monopoly inspired styled anniversary session

love-story

Dan and I have been together for a long time. This past September will mark our 9 years together, but more importantly it has marked a significant landmark in our lives. We have been married for 5 years! As our 5 year mark has come and gone, there is so much for me to remember, but even more for us to look forward to. 5 years of learning and growing together; living and building our faiths together. It’s definitely been a journey, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way. With so many amazing landmarks for us, I believe it is important to remember US, as we are now. Dan has supported me through all of my endeavors. I love this man, I love our puppy, and I love our life together.

To celebrate , I wanted to do something really special. A Monopoly inspired styled anniversary session seemed to be the most reasonable way for me, as a photographer and Dan as a monopoly lover, to celebrate us. When Dan and I thought through this idea, I wanted it to be our own with things that we loved.  Monopoly seemed a perfect fit for our anniversary session. First of all, we are quirky nerds who love games. Dan is a child at heart. He loves board games and playing them with lots of people! I love this about him. We always have someone over playing a game of Monopoly or sharing coffee over discussing past games. Dan even has a group of  Monopoly friends that gather every week to play!  Our house is always full of fun and laughter because of it. When it comes to me, I love all things vintage/parisian with a steampunk twist. To me, there is so much beauty in something weathered and old. I love rust, crumbling walls & old items that were once beautifully constructed. If you mix those old broken things with beautiful florals & lace, that’s where my heart is.

As we began to plan this monopoly inspired anniversary session, so many thoughts, vision boards, and DIY projects ran through my mind.  Being a wedding photographer, myself, I have seen many beautiful weddings styled by insanely talented designers. This project became overwhelming with the idea of putting this together all on my own. To help me get started, I brought this idea to Nicole from Nicole Alexandra Designs. She has always been an amazing person to work with at weddings. Her enthusiasm and dedication to her brides personal style is what drew me to her for this very unique project. The best part about Nicole, is that she guides ideas most beautiful realizations, building them into something personal and beautiful.  Nicole kindly edited my ideas, tied in so many beautiful ideas, florals, and vintage items and turned this styled shoot into what you see. She rallied some amazing vendors like Dish Wish Rentals, Sun & Sparrow Photography, & Cheryl Nacario (hair and makeup) behind this project.

The DIY projects were very important to me – making things by hand adds to each story and makes those personal details last. The main table with the sewing machine base, Dan and I built. We took the old petal sewing machine and an old piece of wood; sanded, stained & created a beautiful desk/table. The bow ties for the boys were next in line. For the puppy, a glittered bow collar that I made from an old belt and fabric sitting in my closet. Dan’s bow tie was simple, black and easy. His cufflinks were 4 separate pieces, two vintage cufflinks and two vintage gold monopoly hats that I fashioned together with special glue. I also made the cake topper & cupcake toppers, the “5 years” sign on top of the centerpiece, the “playing since 2008” cake topper, as well as made all of the paper goods myself. My favorite, and most personal, DIY project were the hand-painted cards. I absolutely love watercolor & calligraphy. Being that these are my free-time hobbies, this project was close to my heart and the perfect way for me to express my love for my husband.

I must talk about the details and fashion!  Laura from Dish Wish used her creative eye and provided us with fantastic vintage plates that correlated to each monopoly plot color.  Some of the other playful items were sourced from Anthropologie and from fabulous local vintage shops.  Both of the gowns featured in the shoot were Claire Pettibone Bridal Gowns.  These gowns fit me so beautifully, showing off my curves and natural beauty. They were truly works of art!  The gorgeous Hair and Makeup was done by talented Cheryl Nacario. From the braided bun to the beautiful red lips, she knew exactly what I wanted and pulled the entire shoot together. Dan’s amazing navy & black suit was from H&M.

On the day of the session, everyone really came together. Ellie and Claudia from Sun & Sparrow made the photo experience super fun and vibrant. While everyone was setting up each section of our session, these two girls were like a whirlwind. Taking photos of details and smiles, they helped Dan and myself feel very comfortable. She was able to set us up in snuggled poses as well as helped us smile and laugh at ourselves. Dan and I are honored that we were able to celebrate our 5 years of marriage together. We were even more honored that our friends were able to support us by styling, posing, painting, and laughing! Thank you to everyone involved in making this so memorable for the both of us.

John & Pam // Villa Verano Santa Barbara wedding

Santa Barbara Wedding Photography - Love on the Beach

Sun & Sparrow is one of the leading engagement and wedding photographers in the Los Angeles area as well as Santa Barbara and Orange County.

FROM THE BRIDE // We can both honestly say that the entire weekend was the best time of our lives!  We spend those few days with our closest friends and family, and we couldn’t be more blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives.

Our wedding day took place in gorgeous Santa Barbara, California.  This location has an extra special meaning because John proposed at the fountain in front of the Old Mission church, the same place we had our wedding ceremony!  The ceremony was nice and the priest allowed us to enjoy the moment with all the people who traveled to be with us.  We then took advantage of the beach landscape to take photos after the wedding; the entire wedding party rode in a cute open-air trolley.  The wedding reception took place in the Riviera Mansion of the University Club, and this unique venue helped us achieve our wedding dreams.  Also, that particular weekend was the annual Spanish Fiesta, so there were even more festivities around Santa Barbara that our guests could enjoy!

Our wedding party and friends stayed in an amazing private villa during the wedding weekend.  That time together gave us a chance to reunite and bond since we aren’t all in one place often enough.  It was a ton of fun and we created even more everlasting memories there.  Even the photographers got to partake in our fun and delicious food ☺

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR WEDDING? //  It’s funny, John and I both thought we were a modern, trendy couple and liked that style.  But, as we were planning the wedding, we were choosing more traditional and romantic themes.  We definitely learned a lot about ourselves through this process.  Rather than a theme, it was most important to us to make this wedding both personalized to us as a couple as well as interactive with our guests.  This wedding wasn’t just about us; we genuinely wanted everyone to have a good time.  Our wedding colors were teal and yellow, but we didn’t want the reception to scream that color scheme.  Our wedding coordinators, Carpe Diem Events, helped us achieve this vision!

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEMORABLE/FAVORITE PART ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY?  //  There were honestly so many memorable moments that it was difficult to choose just one!  If we had to pick, our top 2 favorite moments were probably the surprise flash mob and the last dance.  It was crazy that so many people were involved in learning the dance routine and pulling it off!  During the last dance our friends and family circled us, and John even had a chance to sing.

WHY WAS PHOTOGRAPHY IMPORTANT TO YOU AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SUN & SPARROW?  //  We put so much effort into this wedding, and created so many amazing memories.  The time flies by like everyone says, and there may have been many things we didn’t get a chance to see.  We wanted to remember these moments forever, so great photography was definitely a priority for the both of us.  We clicked with Tiffani right from our initial meeting, and most importantly, we loved the style of Sun & Sparrow’s photography.  Throughout the process they went above and beyond to meet our needs.  From the super fun engagement shoot to the actual wedding day, Tiffani and the team were very professional yet very fun.  I hope this isn’t the last time we work together ☺

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING MARRIED NOW?  //  Although we have been together for many, many years…being married still feels different.  There’s this feeling of true commitment and that we are really in this relationship side-by-side, officially.  It’s great calling each other “husband” and “wife.”
